As the title of the film tells us, the characters in Shadows are only “shadows” of themselves until they bring themselves into existence in more substantial and meaningful ways. In all of Cassavetes’ films, characters can be different things, different people, at once and by turns. They hold multiple possibilities in suspension—they “contain multitudes,” in Whitman’s phrase. They can be anything and everything. (A Woman Under the Influence’s Mabel Longhetti illustrates this ontological multiplicity and flexibility even more clearly than Lelia does here.) Or they can fail to be anything at all because they are only “playing at” being themselves (something each of the main characters in Shadows illustrates in a different way).
