Khi đại dịch cúm xảy ra sẽ tác động mạnh đến nền kinh tế cũng như các hoạt động kinh tế xã hội và sức khoẻ nhân dân. Theo dự báo với dân số của nước ta là 82 triệu người, đại dịch cúm sẽ gây bệnh cho khoảng 16 triệu bệnh nhân (20%), số người tử vong khoảng 819.000 – 1.638.000 người ( 1 – 2%).
Các chuyên gia Tổ chức Y tế Thế gới đã đưa ra một số viễn cảnh của tác động đại dịch cúm đến kinh tế xã hội: Người dân đổ xô đi mua các phương tiện phòng chống dịch; Các dịch vụ công cộng bị rối loạn; Du lịch giảm mạnh, các nước khuyến cáo công dân của họ không đến Việt Nam, người nước ngoài ở Việt Nam về nước, du lịch trong nước giảm mạnh; Giao thông vận tải công cộng hành khách giảm mạnh; Ngân hàng dân lo rút hết tiền để chi tiêu; Giáo dục, một số trường học trong vùng dịch phải đóng cửa; Văn hoá, các hoạt động văn hoá trong vùng dịch bị ngưng trệ; Ngoại giao, các hội nghị quốc tế ở Việt Nam bị huỷ bỏ, người Việt Nam ra nước ngoài bị hạn chế; An ninh trật tự xã hội có nhiều xáo trộn. Đặc biệt công tác y tế, bệnh viện quá tải do số lượng bệnh nhân tăng quá cao, phải thành lập bệnh viện dã chiến; thuốc vật tư y tế khan hiếm không đủ để điều trị bệnh nhân; số lượng người tử vong cao trong cả bệnh viện và cộng đồng.

Influenza pandemic occurrence will have strong impacts on the economy as well as on social-economic activities and public health. It is predicted that with the population of 82 million people, the influenza pandemic will infect about 16 million people (20%), with about 819,000 – 1,638,000 deaths (1 – 2%).
WHO experts have figured out some visions of the influenza pandemic impacts on the economy and society: People rushing to buy pandemic preventive equipment; disturbed public services; sharp decrease in tourism because other countries warn their citizens not to travel to Vietnam; foreigners in Vietnam returning to their homelands; sharp decrease in domestic tourism; sharp decrease in passengers using public means of transport; banks being worried about people withdrawing all their money to spend for fear of a coming pandemic; some schools in pandemic settings being closed; cultural activities in pandemic settings being stagnated; international conferences in Vietnam being cancelled; limited number of Vietnamese travelling abroad; disturbed social security and social order. Especially in terms of health-care work, hospitals are overloaded with a dramatically increased number of patients. Temporary health-care installations must be set up; medicines and health material facilities are scare, unable to treat all patients; high number of deaths in both hospitals and general population.

QUALIFICATIONS
I am a native speaker of Vietnamese, and have been well trained in translation, linguistics and language teaching. I hold a BA degree in English and Translation from the University of Hue (Vietnam), an MA in Applied Linguistics (Bilingual Studies) from the University of Massachusetts-Boston (USA), and a Doctorate in Language Education from the University of Melbourne (Australia). I have also obtained Translation certificates in Vietnam.
EXPERIENCE
I have worked professionally as a translator, editor, writer and language consultant for over 10 years in Vietnam, Australia and the US. For the past three years, I have mainly translated and edited Life Sciences documents (with emphasis on Health Plans, Insurance Providers, Healthcare, Clinical Trials and Research Studies) for language agencies based in North America. My areas of specialization also include Business, Market Research, Education, Tourism and Travel, Health and Safety, and Information Technology. Having lived and worked in the US and Australia for a number of years, together with frequent trips abroad continuously enriches my experience in cross-cultural communication.
I also hold lectureship at the University of Hue, Vietnam. I teach courses in socio-linguistics, cross-cultural communication and translation theory & practice at the undergraduate and graduate levels. I have published a great deal in the areas of applied linguistics, language teaching and cross-cultural communication. A search in Google Scholar (scholar.google.com) for my name "Pham Hoa Hiep" will give access to some of my publications with Oxford University Press!
