PROS
1. Trados is still considered by many to be the best CAT tool out there – if not the most advanced or reliable, at least the most comprehensive one.
2. Their support is supposed to be good. (As long as you are ready to pay for it.)
3. It is actively developed and marketing is aggressive, and with clear messages – not the case with Atril's marketing, which I would call unpredictable.
4. If you are looking for a separate term managing solution (and do not mind the glitches and the counter-productive interface logic) MultiTerm is your best choice.
5. On-the-fly spell checking using Microsoft spell checker (Déjà vu X3 and MemoQ still cannot figure that out).
6. Segments are marked clearly depending on the stage the file is in (translation, reviewing, etc.) This used to be a Trados-exclusive feature (and a very useful one, I might add), but now their competitors offer it as well.
7. There is an actively developed platform (SDL OpenExchange) where third-party vendors and enthusiasts publish Trados add-ons, some of which are indeed very helpful.
CONS
1. Where do I start? Trados is a behemoth – installation packages are big, installation is slow and sometimes troublesome, until recently activating the software was mission impossible for many. It has happened to me that Windows would have to be reinstalled with no chance of returning the license before that and the amount of trouble that would create when trying to activate the newly installed Trados was often mind-boggling. While working, it creates a multitude of unnecessary files in obscure locations.
2. I have been using – and paying for Trados – since 2007, and it that period there has never been a version that I would call reliable. You either cannot get your file in, or you cannot get your translation out. And in between the software used to crash every hour or so. Version 2011 was the first ‘more stable‘ one. The new version 2015 is much more stable than version 2011 when it first came out (they practically sold a beta, or so many freelancers thought – check the forums on this site), but it will still crash and give the odd error message when least expected.
3. Until recently Trados used to cost an arm and a leg (or both), and every year you would have to pay them more for a ‘new’ version, which more often than not was just the old version with a few bugs fixed – come on, SDL, this is not a nice way to treat paying customers! In recent years, they have been forced to reconsider their price policy by the success of the ‘young lions’ at Kilgray, and the low prices of Atril's Déjà vu X2 and X3. Of the ‘Big 3’ CAT makers Trados is the only one that obstinately sells a separate term solution (Multiterm), instead of incorporating it with the project manager like their competitors at Atril and Kilgray. Why? You guessed it correctly: money-wise it is better to sell two overpriced products than just one. Cost aside, Multiterm and Trados simply do not – and have not over the past 7 years – work/ed together flawlessly, they act more like products made by different vendors, who do not like comparing notes. Example? You can now add terms to your term base with a single click, but if you want to edit a term... No, sorry, you cannot do that from inside the editor, you have to open both Trados Studio and Multiterm as two separate products to be able to edit the term. Warum, SDL?!
4. Things are happening notoriously slow at SDL. New technology finds its way there last. Their aggressively advertised AutoSuggest v1 feature (which they initially tried to sell separately) was hopelessly outdated for years (Déjà vu X3 being the leader in offering revolutionary CAT technology), but they would be the last to admit it. What they still call ‘impossible’ is what their competitors at Atril and Kilgray have been offering for 2 years now. In version 2014 for example the threshold for creating an AutoSuggest dictionary was lowered (as a result of the public outcry), and still it was not low enough to make it convenient for the freelancer. Compare this to the fact that Déjà vu X3 creates ‘autosuggest’ entries on-the-fly even from the last segment you have just confirmed. Now, finally, AutoSuggest 2 has emulated the success of Atril's AutoWrite and is offering on-the-fly suggestions even from the last segment you have just confirmed.
5. You will have to pay for a support package. Sometimes I think they keep Trados in a state of disrepair, just so that they can sell support packages. I am sorry if this hurts someone’s feelings, but until recently, Trados was the sole king of the CAT market, raking in huge profits, and I simply cannot understand why it would be so unreliable, and known problems would not be fixed over a period of 7 years, etc. Why? Anyone?
6. Version 2015 is still far from perfect. The sliding panel for adding new terms can drive you crazy, and you will waste precious time looking for important options buried deep in the re-modeled interface.
CONCLUSION
This is the most comprehensive tool out there (can open the widest range of formats), but it is usually somewhat outdated, it costs a lot to buy and renew, and it is both complex and sometimes unreliable. Just like with Windows XP, the old versions of Trados are the most widely used ones (outsourcing translation companies still have them), and this is what dictates the market.
While the competition at Kilgray and MemoQ has developed immensely over the past 2-3 years, and is offering more reliable and small footprint software with (in certain respects) better advanced features, SDL seems to be losing momentum, and ultimately – clients. They have drastically lowered their prices, but if you check the promotions page on www.proz.com, you will find out that they still sell less than their nearest competitor Kilgray. Although, they seem to finally be on the right track with Studio 2015, precious 3-4 years have been lost and now SDL has surrendered its position of CAT leader and is playing the catch-up game with Kilgray (in terms of new customers) and Atril (in terms of technology).

Probably quite a lot wrong with this review now and in my opinion should be removed because it's too out of date and not relevant at all.
First it's based on Studio 2014 and we have had Studio 2015 available for over a year. But lets take the Cons one at a time:
1. It is quite a large installation but this includes sample projects, offline help files etc. These are pretty large. The activation process has been simple for years.
2. I believe the product is mature and no more error prone than any software application of this complexity.
3. MultiTerm has never been sold separately to anyone purchasing Studio. This is nonsense, it's always been included. It is sold as a separate product in its own right and this is because it is the worlds leading Terminology solution and is used by terminologists who don't use the translation tools at all. This is not the case for any other CAT.
The product is also not expensive compared to competitive products. The prices are very similar and when you consider what you get for your license (Studio, MultiTerm, OpenExchange and development platform) then it's a bargain!
4. Studio 2015 brought AutoSuggest 2.0 This is a much enhanced feature allowing you to receive suggestions from not only the previous AutoSuggest Dictionary, terminology and autotext, but also from subsegment phrases drawn in realtime from your Translation Memories, from any Machine Translation provider you are using and from custom AutoSuggest providers too such as the Regex AutoSuggest Provider or the Tilde Terminology plugin for example. In this regard I consider the AutoSuggest feature in Studio 2015 to be the most advanced from any CAT.
5. SDL do sell support packages and for a business critical software it would be recommended to use one. This provides guaranteed response times and free updates for all software releases, even new major versions. However, we also provide free community support and have done for years. More recently we have our own support community which is also free and users receive fast and reactive help most of the time. This can be found at http://xl8.one
6. Java was completely removed as a required component within MultiTerm in the 2014 version of the product. MultiTerm has continued to be developed and new features allowing terms to be added with a single click, or deleted from within the Studio interface while translating have been added in Studio 2014 as well.
7. The sliding panels are optional. This all down to configuration in the interface. Finding options is easier than it has ever been before with the introduction of the ribbon. I think like anything, if you are prepared to learn how to get the best from your software then you will. If not, then you won't!
It's interesting how in point 3. Trados costs an arm and a leg, yet in the conclusion the products are sold for less than their competitors. Which is it? The truth is we are on a par, no more expensive and no less... but we provide a lot more in the package than we are given credit for.
Studio 2014: the tool I choose to use for all my translations

Emma Goldsmith . I’ve been using Trados and Studio for many years now and enjoy being an early adopter (beta tester, in fact). One drawback of being an early adopter of any software is identifying and suffering the inevitable bugs that appear when the software is first released. But, with Studio 2014 I've hardly been affected by bugs; crashes are very, very rare; and there hasn’t been a single file that has refused to save as target in its native format.
As a result I can confirm that it’s a robust program and I can rely on it 100% for all my translations.
New features in Studio 2014? Well, there are lots, but I particularly like:
- Merging multiple files on the fly at any stage in the work process (just to do a word count, to translate several files at once, or to do a quick find&replace in multiple files in an editing job).
- Concordance on a whole segment, which is triggered automatically if a fuzzy match isn’t found.
- The ribbon, because you can just hide it with Ctrl+F1 if you’re familiar with Studio and if you’re not, it’s easier to spot what you’re looking for. Increasing font size, copying source to target, clearing formatting - it’s all there in full view now in the ribbon.
Anything I don’t like?
Yes, I’m not keen on the new alignment tool that replaces Winalign, but I hear it will soon be enhanced to let us edit the alignment results before converting them to sdlxliff format. I’m looking forward to that.

How easy is it to learn?
Poor Customer Service, lots of technical issues

Anna Ebner . The software itself is pretty easy to learn, but I have had several technical issues that have prevented me from even opening my software. As a freelance translator with looming deadlines, I can not afford to wait a week to hear back from someone who can't help me anyway. Their customer service is terrible, making the product very undesirable and more of a pain than a useful tool.

How easy is it to learn?
SDL Trados Studio 2014: not just a single product but part of a Language Platform

If you look at SDL Trados Studio 2014 just as a single CAT tool and compare it with other CAT tools, I’m sure you’ll have many pros and some cons that have all been well discussed in several places. However, many cons are often not very correct due to a lack of real knowledge and training in the software and many times slightly biased and based on what you are used to. For example, a wrong deduction that I’ve seen posted here is that SDL charges for its term solution (MultiTerm) separately. Fact is that MultiTerm is included in all license purchases of SDL Trados Studio, but can be purchased separately. Other cons many times are because customers have an old version of the software and the problem has already been solved in the new versions like the java issues, which was eliminated in a FREE SP2 of Studio 2014. We all know that SDL probably has made some mistakes in the past, but we must remember that merging two CAT tools like SDL Trados 2007 (Workbench), at the time the world’s most widely used CAT tool, and SDLX wasn’t an easy task. SDL had to create one product with the best of the two worlds and in my opinion they have finally done that with Studio 2014.
But what I think makes SDL Trados Studio 2014 a step above from other CAT tools is that it is a product that is part of a whole Language Solution. I can use SDL’s private and secure machine translation solution, download tons of applications from their App Store and collaborate easily across networks from any location with SDL GroupShare. So even though maybe the functionalities in SDL Trados Studio 2014 in itself maybe are pretty close to some of their competitors, no other CAT tool has a community of developers that can develop and add any functionality or application they want to SDL Trados Studio 2014. So that’s why I think SDL’s machine translation solution (SDL Language Cloud), it’s App Store (SDL OpenExchange) and its collaboration platform (SDL GroupShare) and how they all integrate very well with SDL Trados Studio 2014 are the main reasons why it’s still the best CAT tool on the market.

How easy is it to learn?

Giorginaspark . The new version of Studio seems easier to use and i must say it is faster than the previous version (2011) in many ways.
Opening files and most tasks happen much more quickly.
The new alignment is much easier to use, although would be nice to be able to edit the results.
