Alle Motoren, die Bewegung durch Verbrennung ihres Kraftstoffs im Motorinneren erzeugen, werden als Verbrennungsmotoren bezeichnet. Dampfmaschinen, die ihren Kraftstoff außerhalb verbrennen, gehören demzufolge nicht zu den Verbrennungsmotoren. Mit Ottokraftstoff angetriebene Benzinmotoren gehören zu den gebräuchlichsten Verbrennungsmotortypen. Andere Verbrennungsmotortypen können auch Dieselkraftstoff, Wasserstoff, Methangas, Propan und andere Kraftstoffe verbrennen, wobei allerdings jeder Motor üblicherweise mit nur jeweils einer Kraftstoffart betrieben wird. Für die Verbrennung eines anderen Kraftstoffs müssen Anpassungen beispielsweise an der Zusammensetzung des Kraftstoff-Luft-Gemisches erfolgen.
In einem Ottomotor wird ein Gemisch aus Benzin und Luft in den Zylinder gesprüht. Dieses Gemisch wird dann vom Kolben verdichtet. Während des Verdichtungstakts wird an einem optimalen Punkt von einer Zündkerze ein elektrischer Funken erzeugt, der dann den Kraftstoff entzündet. Die Verbrennung des Kraftstoffs erzeugt Wärme, sodass die sich im Zylinder befindlichen heißen Gase einen höheren Druck ausüben als das vormalige Kraftstoff-Luft-Gemisch, wodurch die heißen Gase den Kolben wieder nach unten drücken. Diese Verbrennungsgase werden schließlich abgeleitet, und für den zweiten Takt wird erneut ein Kraftstoff-Luft-Gemisch in den Zylinder eingespritzt. Die nach außen gerichtete geradlinige Bewegung des Kolbens wird von der Kurbelwelle umgelenkt und in eine Drehbewegung umgewandelt. Die Steuerung des Kraftstoff-Luft-Gemisches erfolgt mittels Ventilen, über die auch die Verbrennungsgase zum richtigen Zeitpunkt aus dem Zylinder entlassen werden.
Zweitaktmotor
Als Zweitaktmotoren ausgeführte Verbrennungsmotoren werden typischerweise in Klein- und Freizeitgeräten eingesetzt, die nur relativ kleiner sowie kostengünstiger und mechanisch anspruchsloser Motoren bedürfen (z. B. in Kettensägen, Jetskis, Mopeds usw.).
Zwar ist der Aufbau eines Zweitaktmotors relativ einfach, doch sein Betrieb unterliegt komplexen dynamischen Gegebenheiten. Ein Zweitaktmotor verfügt über verschiedene für diesen Motortyp einzigartige Ausstattungsmerkmale. Als erstes sei das zwischen Einlasskanal und Kurbelgehäuse befindliche Membranventil genannt. Das Kraftstoff-Luft-Gemisch gelangt durch den Einlasskanal in das Kurbelgehäuse und wird dort vom in einer Richtung wirkenden Membranventil festgehalten. Im Gegensatz zu einem herkömmlichen Viertaktmotor ist der Zylinder des Zweitaktmotors nicht mit Ventilen ausgestattet. Einlass und Auslass der Gemische und Gase erfolgen hier über Schlitzanordnungen – spezielle in die Zylinderwand gefräste Kanäle, über die Kraftstoff-Luft-Gemisch vom Kurbelgehäuse eingelassen und Abgase aus dem Motor wieder entlassen werden. Diese Kanäle sind offengelegt, wenn sich der Kolben am unteren Totpunkt befindet.
Das Kraftstoff-Luft-Gemisch wird vom Vergaser bzw. Kraftstoffeinspritzsystem durch das Membranventil in das Kurbelgehäuse eingesaugt. Bei der Abwärtsfahrt des Kolbens wird zuerst der Auslasskanal offengelegt, wodurch die heißen Abgase aus dem Zylinder zu strömen beginnen. Wenn sich der Kolben am unteren Totpunkt befindet, steht das Kurbelgehäuse unter Druck. Sobald der Einlasskanal offengelegt ist, gelangt unter Druck stehendes Kraftstoff-Luft-Gemisch in den Brennraum. Da sowohl Einlass- als auch Auslasskanal zur gleichen Zeit geöffnet sind, haben richtiges Timing und die Luftstromdynamik einen entscheidenden Einfluss auf eine einwandfreie Motorfunktion. Bei der Aufwärtsbewegung des Kolbens werden die Schlitzkanäle wieder abgedeckt, und das Kraftstoff-Luft-Gemisch wird gezündet. Die nun entstehenden heißen Gase erhöhen den Druck und schieben den Kolben mit großer Kraft wieder nach unten, wodurch der Motor Arbeit leisten kann.
Viertaktmotor
Verbrennungsmotoren in Viertaktausführung gehören heutzutage zu den am häufigsten eingesetzten Motortypen in Fahrzeugen und Industrieanwendungen (Pkws und Lkws, Generatoren usw.). Während des ersten Kolbentakts (Abwärtshub) wird Kraftstoff-Luft-Gemisch in den Zylinder eingesaugt. Beim anschließend folgenden Aufwärtshub (2. Takt) wird das Kraftstoff-Luft-Gemisch komprimiert und gezündet. Die dadurch entstehenden heißen Verbrennungsgase zwingen im nun folgenden dritten Takt den Kolben wieder nach unten. Two-stroke Engines
Internal combustion engines running as two-stroke engines are typically used in small and recreation-related equipment, which requires only relatively small, inexpensive and mechanically less demanding engines (chain saws, jet skis, mopeds, etc.).
While the construction of a two-stroke engine is relatively simple, its operation is subject to complex dynamic conditions. Among the characteristics of this engine type, a two-stroke engine is equipped with several unique features. Firstly, a diaphragm pump is located between the intake port and the crankcase. The fuel-air mixture flows through the intake port into the crankcase, where it is held by the unidirectional diaphragm pump. Unlike a conventional four-stroke engine, the cylinder of the two-stroke engine is not equipped with valves. The intake and exit of gases and mixtures takes place via slotted arrangements- channels built into the cylinder wall- through which the air-fuel mixture from the crankcase is admitted and combustion gases from the engine are released. These channels are exposed when the piston is at the dead-center bottom.
The fuel-air mixture is sucked through the diaphragm pump into the crankcase by the carburetor or fuel injection system. During the downward travel of the piston, the exhaust port is exposed, whereby hot exhaust gases from the cylinders begin to flow. When the piston is at the dead-center bottom, the crankcase is pressurized. Once the intake port is exposed, the pressurized fuel-air mixture reaches the combustion chamber. Since both intake and exhaust port are open at the same time, good timing and air flow dynamics have a decisive influence on proper motor function. During the upward movement of the piston, the slot channels are covered again and the fuel-air mixture is ignited. The resulting hot gases increase the pressure and push the piston back down with great force, allowing the motor to work.
Four-stroke Engines
Four-stroke internal combustion engines are found in today’s most commonly used types of motor vehicles and industrial applications (cars, trucks, generators, etc.) During the first piston stroke (down stroke), the fuel-air mixture is sucked into the cylinder. During the following (second) up-stroke, the fuel-air mixture is compressed and ignited. The resulting hot combustion gases force the piston back down in the third stroke. In the fourth and last upward stroke, the exhaust gases are discharged from the cylinder.
