Fate and the hard work of various generations of my family have conspired to cause two profoundly natural materials to criss-cross our lives. From them we have gleaned a zest for life, an interest in the world, conviviality with others, the pleasure of work and enjoying the fruits gathered.
Our involvement in working with cork began with my grandfather back in the 18th century. Vines and wine cropped up during my generation, but within the same trend of developing our human and corporate activities in natural domains, ones that are genuine and exclusive to rare regions of the world.
We all know that cork and wine are not products of the here and now. In fact, they only exist nowadays because over many centuries nature and mankind wove them into an intimate alliance, perfecting the best that each had to offer. As we unravel these pages, we travel and experience that long journey, made with enormous changes, but with that natural and unassailable bond always holding firm.
Today, despite all drawbacks, arising from great historical and cultural upheaval, from all the evolution, nothing has been able to separate them, and they continue to form an integral part of a response to a society that wishes to be more prosperous, more cultured and exacting.
In these times of overpowering technology and global business, this feeling of being twinned with the peasants of ancient Egypt who sealed their amphora with cork provides a sense of magic, without which life would be inconceivable. Likewise with the knowledge that in harvesting a natural cork stopper we are harming nothing, but rather co-operating with a tree and a forest that naturally renew themselves, a forest where the eagle soars, lynx run free and bees make their honey.

Source text - English On behalf of everyone at The Fullerton Hotel Singapore I welcome you, and thank you for joining us on this occasion as we celebrate this historic day for the Fullerton Building.
Today, The Fullerton Hotel joins the ranks of 70 buildings and structures in Singapore which have been conferred the status of National Monuments in recognition of their historical importance to the community and their architectural merit.
Standing at the mouth of the Singapore River, the Fullerton Building has since 1928 bore witness to Singapore's progress through the economic, social and political tides brought by the colonial era, the Japanese Occupation and the post-independence years. If our Grand Dame could speak, she would have much to tell
...Of her youth when she was the "Most Important Post Office in the East", the centre of communication through which vital news from the outside world was received from ships calling at the port.
...Of her days when all roads in Singapore led to the Fullerton Building, when there was no postal code and everyone measured distances in reference to her when she was known as "Mile Zero".
...Of the stories of our dedicated leaders and public servants who worked tirelessly and conscientiously to steer the course of our nation from a nondescript trading outpost with a bleak future to the inspiring metropolis that is, the toast of development economists.
The Fullerton Building housed the Ministry of Finance and it was here that the Economic Development Board and the Monetary Authority of Singapore were created for the vital roles they were to play in Singapore's rapid development.
It was here that Dr Goh KengSwee, then Minister of Finance in self-governing Singapore, broke news of its impending independence to a small group of civil servants. Sworn to secrecy, the group scrambled to rewrite their economic plans, execute them and transform our city state into what it is today.
Finally, she would tell of her transformation in 2001 into The Fullerton Hotel, graciously opened by the then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong where a new generation of movers and shakers gather again for business lunches, conferences and meetings; where families and friends, Singaporeans and foreigners, enjoy a cup of coffee in the sun-lit atrium.
The Fullerton Building has been a frequent feature in the memories of our political luminaries and many ordinary Singaporeans and we are very glad to have recorded some of these memories from the Fullerton alumni – the people who have worked in this iconic building -- in our new Fullerton Stories book and video.
Today, while we celebrate the rich history of the Fullerton building we are mindful that it will continue to feature in the next chapter of our nation's history. While we preserve Singapore's history in this national monument and we look forward to stewarding the hotel's contribution of the Singapore story for many generations to come.

In my time working at Montblanc, I have seen new collections emerge and classics revitalized. For me, the Montblanc M fountain pen is the best companion for everyday life. The result is simply breathtaking as the Montblanc designers and watch artisans brought to life a complete new line inspired by the stars of the night sky that Vasco Da Gama used to follow to navigate in unknown territories on his journey to India. The limited edition collection features a full complications range from dual time to moon phase and annual calendar functions. The highlight of the collection is the Villeret Tourbillon Cylindrique Geosphere Vasco da Gama. Limited to 18 pieces only, it is probably one of the most impressive mechanical wonders ever developed by Montblanc Fine Watchmaking Manufactures.
