Source text - English RETAIL Adventures, the company behind a number of discount chains including Crazy Clark's, Go-Lo, Sam's Warehouse and Tasmanian-based discount stores Chickenfeed, appears to be on the brink of collapse after the company asked its suppliers to halt all deliveries.
An email sent by Retail Adventures' buying team this week advises suppliers that the company is "working through our payments to suppliers", and asks that they halt all shipments until they have been paid for merchandise that has already been delivered.
One supplier contacted by The Australian said he was already owed more than $100,000 and the retail company had been increasingly late in paying its bills over recent months.
"I had expected they would try to trade through Christmas, but if they are knocking back stock they will need for that period then that looks like it's not going to happen," the supplier said on condition of anonymity.
The supplier said there were other signs the company was in trouble, including frequent turnover of management.
"We've dealt with at least three new buyers over the past 12 months," the supplier said.
Retail Adventures is owned by Jan Cameron, founder of the Kathmandu chain of camping equipment stores, who in 2009 paid about $70 million to buy what was then Australian Discount Retail out of receivership.
The company has refused to lodge accounts with the corporate regulator since it was established. However, The Mercury newspaper reported this week that management documents showed it had lost $35m last financial year and $36m the year before.
The company was also reported to have closed five Chickenfeed stores, just weeks after the chain declared it would stop selling fresh products such as milk and bread.
Ms Cameron has been tipping her own cash into the company to keep it afloat -- documents lodged with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission last year show Retail Adventures owes $120m to her private company Bicheno Investments -- and took over management control in March after the company lost its fourth chief executive in four years.
She has since cleared the boardroom as well, shunting Bruce Irvine, chairman of Kiwi building society Heartland as a director in July, followed by former chief operating officer Penny Moss and accountant Norman Draper last month, leaving herself as the sole director and company secretary.
Ms Moss told The Australian in March that the company had suffered losses in the two years since acquisition, but these were largely due to store closures and one-off costs from restructuring the business, with a "significant improvement" expected in pre-tax earnings for 2012 and a return to profitability in 2013.
Meanwhile the company and Ms Cameron are being sued in the Federal Magistrates Court by former human resources boss Rebecca Spain after being sacked in June following a dispute over her request for reduced working hours. Both respondents are contesting the case.
Retail Adventures did not respond to requests for comment.
