Source text - Portuguese A janela da loja era pintada de preto e as letras douradas apagadas diziam: BAYRIDGE CLUBE DE CAÇA E PESÇA em letras grandes. Embaixo em letras menores: APENAS INTEGRANTES. O sol do fim da tarde formava um funil de luz por um buraco na pintura, deixado propositalmente para monitorar qualquer atividade próxima a entrada.
A sala frontal da loja era velha e mofada. Anos de fumaça de tabaco haviam impregnado as cortinas cheias de pó que adornavam as janelas da frente. Anos atrás essas decorações foram a ideia de decoração da esposa de um dos membros. O cheiro acre de cerveja rançosa deixou sua marca. Num dos lados da sala havia um grande e ornado minibar de carvalho. Atrás do minibar havia um grande espelho, sua moldura decorada com querubins e serafins tocando liras. O espelho em si precisava urgentemente de um re-espelhamento, esfumaçado por anos de nuvens de tabaco acumuladas e nunca removidas. O bar estava carregado de vários tipos de vinhos e licores caros.
Uma mesa de pôquer grande e velha, com um feltro desbotado e lugar para oito jogadores ficava no meio da sala. Na frente do lugar para cada jogador havia um espaço feito na mesa para acomodar as fichas de pôquer de cada jogador. Uma luminária retrô com um quebra-luz verde ficava pendurada sobre o centro da mesa.
Era fim de tarde e quatro homens estavam sentados envolta da mesa, jogando pôquer. Jimmy Provitera era o dealer. À sua direita estava Massimo “Max” Quartanta. Sentado ao seu lado estava Gino Tancredi. Sonny Sasso completa o quarteto. Jimmy se dirige a Gino em sua esquerda.
—Quantos? –Ele disse.
—Três —Gino respondeu. Jimmy distribuiu as cartas e olhou para Sonny sentando do outro lado da mesa.
—Me dê uma — Disse Sonny.
—O que caralhos você tem? – Jimmy perguntou
—É pagar para ver. — Sonny disse. Jimmy se virou para Max, sentado à sua direita.
—Eu quero duas cartas – Disse Max.
—Dealer compra três. — Jimmy disse e comprou três cartas.
Eles examinaram suas cartas. Após alguns segundos Jimmy, ficando impaciente, disse:
— O que você tem aí, Gino?
—Só um segundo, estou pensando — Disse Gino. Então ele lentamente e deliberadamente examinou sua mão, deslizando carta por carta, fazendo um som de grunhido a cada carta que ele via. Ele se agitava e bufava ao pensar em sua mão.
—Vamos lá, vamos lá Gino, isso daqui não é uma cirurgia cerebral — Disse Sonny.
—Okay, okay, segurem-se. — Gino disse.
Translation - English
The store window is painted black and the faded gold lettering states: BAYRIDGE ROD AND GUN CLUB in large letters. Beneath it in smaller letters: MEMBERS ONLY. The late afternoon sun funnels a shaft of light through a hole in the paint, purposely left as a peephole to monitor activity near the entryway.
The front room of the store is old and musty. Years of tobacco smoke clings to the dust-laden green drapes that frame the painted out front windows. Years ago these decorations were some member's wife's idea of the latest decor. The acrid smell of stale beer has also left its evidence.
On one side of the room is a huge ornate oak bar. Behind the bar is a huge mirror, its frame decorated with carvings of cherubs and seraphim strumming on lyres. The mirror itself is badly in need of re-silvering and is clouded with years of tobacco smoke accumulations never removed. The bar is fully stocked with a large assortment of expensive wines and liquors.
An old, large round poker table with a faded green felt covering and room for up to eight players is situated in the center of the room. In front of each player position is a trough set in the table that can hold that player's poker chips. An old style light fixture with a green metal shade hangs over the center of the table.
It is late afternoon and four men sit around the table, playing poker. Jimmy Provitera is dealing. To his right is Massimo "Max" Quaranta. Seated next to him is Gino Tancredi. Sonny Sasso completes the foursome. Jimmy addresses Gino to his left.
"How many?" he says.
"Three," Gino replies. Jimmy deals them out, and looks toward Sonny sitting across from him.
"Gimme one," Sonny says.
"What the fuck you got?" Jimmy asks.
"You pay, you see," Sonny says. Jimmy turns to Max, seated to his right.
"I'll take two cards," Max says.
"Dealer takes three," Jimmy says and deals himself three cards.
They examine their cards...after a few seconds Jimmy, getting impatient, says, "Whattia do, Gino?"
"Just a second I'm thinking," Gino says... then he slowly, deliberately, examines his hand, sliding open one card at a time, making a grunting sound with each card he views. He fidgets and fumes as he ponders his hand.
"C'mon, c'mon Gino, this ain't fuckin' brain surgery," Sonny says.
"Okay, Okay, hold your horses," Gino says.
