Source text - English The Seven Liberal Arts
The expression artes liberales, chiefly used during the Middle Ages, does not mean arts as we understand the word at this present day, but those branches of knowledge which were taught in the schools of that time. They are called liberal (Latin liber, free), because they serve the purpose of training the free man, in contrast with the artes illiberales, which are pursued for economic purposes; their aim is to prepare the student not for gaining a livelihood, but for the pursuit of science in the strict sense of the term, i.e. the combination of philosophy and theology known as scholasticism. They are seven in number and may be arranged in two groups, the first embracing grammar, rhetoric, and dialectic, in other words, the sciences of language, of oratory, and of logic, better known as the artes sermocinales, or language studies; the second group comprises arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music, i.e. the mathematico-physical disciplines, known as the artes reales, or physicae. The first group is considered to be the elementary group, whence these branches are also called artes triviales, or trivium, i.e. a well-beaten ground like the junction of three roads, or a cross-roads open to all. Contrasted with them we find the mathematical disciplines as artes quadriviales, or quadrivium, or a road with four branches. The seven liberal arts are thus the members of a system of studies which embraces language branches as the lower, the mathematical branches as the intermediate, and science properly so called as the uppermost and terminal grade. Though this system did not receive the distinct development connoted by its name until the Middle Ages, still it extends in the history of pedagogy both backwards and forwards; for while, on the one hand, we meet with it among the classical nations, the Greeks and Romans, and even discover analogous forms as forerunners in the educational system of the ancient Orientals, its influence, on the other hand, has lasted far beyond the Middle Ages, up to the present time.
It is desirable, for several reasons, to treat the system of the seven liberal arts from this point of view, and this we propose to do in the present article. The subject possesses a special interest for the historian, because an evolution, extending through more than two thousand years and still in active operation, here challenges our attention as surpassing both in its duration and its local ramifications all other phases of pedagogy. But it is equally instructive for the philosopher because thinkers like Pythagoras, Plato, and St. Augustine collaborated in the framing of the system, and because in general much thought and, we may say, much pedagogical wisdom have been embodied in it. Hence, also, it is of importance to the practical teacher, because among the comments of so many schoolmen on this subject may be found many suggestions which are of the greatest utility.

A expressão artes liberales, usada principalmente durante a Idade Média, não significa o conceito de "artes" como a concebemos hoje em dia, porém, fazia significação aos ramos de conhecimento que eram ensinados nas escolas daquele período. Elas são chamadas de “liberais” (do Latim liber, livre), porque elas têm como objetivo o ensino do homem livre, em contraposição às artes illiberales, das quais tinham como objetivo propósitos econômicos; seus objetivos visavam preparar seus estudantes não com intento de ganhar seus meios de subsistência econômica, mas para a busca da ciência — no significado estrito do termo —, ou seja, a combinação entre a filosofia e a teologia, mais conhecido como Escolasticismo. São elas sete e são agrupadas em exatos dois grupos. O primeiro é relativo a gramática, retórica e a dialética; em outras palavras, as ciências da linguagem, da oratória, e da lógica, mais conhecidas como as artes sermocinales (ou estudos linguísticos). O segundo grupo é composto por aritmética, geometria, astronomia e música; em outras palavras, as disciplinas físico-matemáticas, conhecidas como artes reales, ou physicae. O primeiro grupo é considerado como sendo o grupo elementar, e é por isso que essas matérias de estudo são também chamadas de artes triviales, ou trivium; ou seja, um chão bem planificado de uma estrada com três bifurcações, ou como uma encruzilhada entre três estradas que estão totalmente abertas para passagem. E em contraste com elas, temos as disciplinas matemáticas, conhecidas como artes quadriviales, ou quadrivium, ou uma estrada com quatro bifurcações. As sete artes liberais são, então, membros de um sistema de estudos dos quais englobam o ramo de estudos linguísticos como o nível iniciante; o ramo de estudos matemáticos como o nível intermediário; e a ciência, propriamente dita, como o nível mais elevado e superior. Embora este sistema não tenha recebido o distinto desenvolvimento denotado pelo seu próprio nome até o início da Idade Média, o mesmo continuou a estender-se por entre os anais da história da pedagogia, tanto antes como depois de seu desenvolvimento. Pois enquanto por um lado nós nos deparamos com ela no meio de duas civilizações clássicas, as nações Grega e Romana, e até mesmo por termos tido descoberto formas análogas de ensino como percursores do sistema educacional das antigas nações Orientais, sua influência, por outro lado, durou muito, muito além do período de vigência da Idade Média, até o presente momento.
É desejável, por diversas razões, tratar o sistema das sete artes liberais deste ponto de vista, e o mesmo propomos fazer neste presente artigo. O assunto em questão possui especial interesse para os historiadores, porque uma evolução, que se estendeu por mais de dois mil anos e do qual a mesma permanece em constante soerguimento, desafia, aqui, nossa atenção se analisada sua transcendência tanto em sua duração como em suas ramificações locais em todas as fases da pedagogia. Porém, é igualmente instrutivo para o filósofo porque pensadores como Pitágoras, Platão e Santo Agostinho colaboraram na construção do sistema, e porque, no geral, muito pensamento — como poderíamos dizer —, e muita sabedoria pedagógica foram inseridas nele. Daqui, igualmente, surge a importância ao professor prático, pois entre os comentários de tão diversos escolásticos sobre este tópico, podemos, assim, achar muitas sugestões dos quais são da mais grande utilidade.

Keys for getting the most out of what the preacher says
Jesus said, 'Therefore consider carefully how you listen' (Luke 8:18). Here are some cautions and directions, in order to help you hear sermons with profit and advantage.
1. Come to hear them, not out of curiosity, but from a sincere desire to know and do your duty. To enter His house merely to have our ears entertained, and not our hearts reformed, must certainly be highly displeasing to the Most High God, as well as unprofitable to ourselves.
2. Give diligent heed to the things that are spoken from the Word of God. If an earthly king were to issue a royal proclamation, and the life or death of his subjects entirely depended on performing or not performing its conditions, how eager would they be to hear what those conditions were! And shall we not pay the same respect to the King of kings, and Lord of lords, and lend an attentive ear to His ministers, when they are declaring, in His name, how our pardon, peace, and happiness may be secured?
3. Do not entertain even the least prejudice against the minister. That was the reason Jesus Christ Himself could not do many mighty works, nor preach to any great effect among those of His own country; for they were offended at Him. Take heed therefore, and beware of entertaining any dislike against those whom the Holy Ghost has made overseers over you.
Consider that the clergy are men of like passions with yourselves. And though we should even hear a person teaching others to do what he has not learned himself, yet that is no reason for rejecting his doctrine. For ministers speak not in their own, but in Christ’s name. And we know who commanded the people to do whatever the scribes and Pharisees should say unto them, even though they did not do themselves what they said (see Matt. 23:1-3).
4. Be careful not to depend too much on a preacher, or think more highly of him than you ought to think. Preferring one teacher over another has often been of ill consequence to the church of God. It was a fault which the great Apostle of the Gentiles condemned in the Corinthians: 'For whereas one said, I am of Paul; another, I am of Apollos: are you not carnal, says he? For who is Paul, and who is Apollos, but instruments in God’s hands by whom you believed?' (1 Cor. 1:12; 2:3-5).
Are not all ministers sent forth to be ministering ambassadors to those who shall be heirs of salvation? And are they not all therefore greatly to be esteemed for their work’s sake?
5. Make particular application to your own hearts of everything that is delivered. When our Savior was discoursing at the last supper with His beloved disciples and foretold that one of them should betray Him, each of them immediately applied it to his own heart and said, 'Lord, is it I?' (Matt. 26:22).
Oh, that persons, in like manner, when preachers are dissuading from any sin or persuading to any duty, instead of crying, 'This was intended for such and such a one!' instead would turn their thoughts inwardly, and say, 'Lord, is it I?' How far more beneficial should we find discourses to be than now they generally are!
6. Pray to the Lord, before, during, and after every sermon, to endue the minister with power to speak, and to grant you a will and ability to put into practice what he shall show from the Book of God to be your duty.
No doubt it was this consideration that made St. Paul so earnestly entreat his beloved Ephesians to intercede with God for him: 'Praying always, with all manner of prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and for me also, that I may open my mouth with boldness, to make known the mysteries of the gospel' (Eph. 6:19-20). And if so great an apostle as St. Paul needed the prayers of his people, much more do those ministers who have only the ordinary gifts of the Holy Spirit.
If only all who hear me this day would seriously apply their hearts to practice what has now been told them! How ministers would see Satan, like lightning, fall from heaven, and people find the Word preached sharper than a two-edged sword and mighty, through God, to the pulling down of the devil’s strongholds!

Meios para absorver o máximo do que o pregador diz:
Jesus disse, "Vede, pois, como ouvis[...]" (Lucas 8:18). Aqui trago algumas considerações e direções a fim de ajudá-los a ouvir sermões de forma proveitosa e benéfica.
1. Aproxime-se para ouvi-los, e não apenas por curiosidade, porém, com um sincero desejo de saber e fazer seu dever como cristão. Simplesmente entrar em Sua casa meramente para ter nossos ouvidos entretidos, e não em busca de ter nossos corações reformados, certamente irá ser altamente desagradável ao Deus Altíssimo, bem como não seria proveitoso para nós mesmos.
2. Dê atenção diligente às coisas que são faladas provindas da Palavra de Deus. Se um rei terreno quisesse emitir uma proclamação real, e a vida e a morte de seus súditos dependessem inteiramente no feitio ou não de suas condições, imagine, então, quão ansiosos iriam ficar ao ouvir quais seriam aquelas condições! E não devemos nós prestar o mesmo respeito ao Rei dos reis, e Senhor dos senhores, e escutar atentamente aos Seus ministros, quando estão declarando, em Seu nome, como nosso perdão, paz, e felicidade serão garantidos?
3. Não cogite nem mesmo o menor preconceito contra o ministro. Esta foi a razão pela qual o próprio Jesus Cristo não pôde fazer trabalhos mais proeminentes, nem pregar com qualquer grande efeito dentre os seus de seu próprio país. Tenha atenção, portanto, e cuidado para com qualquer cogitação de qualquer aversão àqueles quem o Espirito Santo fez superintendente por sobre vocês.
Considere igualmente que o clero é composto de homens com paixões semelhantes às suas. E embora devamos até mesmo ouvir uma pessoa ensinando aquilo que nem ela mesmo aprendera direito, isso não é motivo para rejeitar sua doutrina. Para ministros que não falam em seus próprios nomes, porém, no nome de Cristo. E sabemos quem ordenou ao povo que fizesse o que os escribas e fariseus lhes dissessem para fazer, mesmo que não fizessem o que diziam (Mateus 23:1–3).
4. Tome cuidado para não depender demasiadamente de um pregador, ou em pensar mais proeminentemente nele do que seria o saudável a se fazer. A preferência que se pode desenvolver mais em um professor que em outro tem frequentemente provocado uma consequência negativa à igreja de Deus. Foi em um erro que o grande Apostolo dos Gentios condenou em Coríntios: "Porque, dizendo um: Eu sou de Paulo; e outro: Eu de Apolo; porventura não sois carnais? Pois, quem é Paulo, e quem é Apolo, senão ministros pelos quais crestes, e conforme o que o Senhor deu a cada um?" (1 Coríntios 3:4–5).
Ora, não são todos os ministros enviados adiante para serem embaixadores ministeriais para aqueles que são herdeiros da salvação? E não são todos eles, portanto, excepcionais, para serem estimados por seu trabalho?
5. Faça aos seus próprios corações aplicação particular de tudo aquilo que seja pregado. Quando nosso Salvador estava discursando em sua última ceia com Seus amados discípulos e quando predisse que um deles iria o trair, cada um deles imediatamente aplicaram o dito aos seus próprios corações e disseram, "Porventura sou eu, Senhor?" (Mateus 26:22).
Ó, aquelas pessoas, de forma semelhante, quando pregadores estão os dissuadindo a existência de qualquer pecado ou os persuadindo para o feitio de qualquer tarefa, em vez de gritarem, dizendo: "Isto foi dito com a intenção de ser para uma pessoa e somente para essa uma pessoa!", e por conseguinte, retraíssem seus pensamentos para si mesmos e dissessem: "Porventura sou eu, Senhor?", quão benéficos seriam os discursos que encontrariam dos que hoje são os geralmente proferidos?
6. Ore ao Senhor antes, durante e depois de cada sermão, para revestir o ministro com poder para falar, e conceder a você vontade e capacidade para pôr em prática o que ele mostrará do Livro de Deus como dever seu a realizar.
Sem dúvida que foi essa a consideração que fez com que São Paulo, tão sinceramente, suplicasse aos seus amados irmãos de Éfeso a interceder com Deus a ele: “Orando em todo o tempo com toda a oração e súplica no Espírito, e vigiando nisto com toda a perseverança e súplica por todos os santos, e por mim; para que me seja dada, no abrir da minha boca, a palavra com confiança, para fazer notório o mistério do evangelho" (Efésios 6:18–19). E se tão grandemente um apostolo como São Paulo precisou das orações de seu povo, imagine o quão maior seria para aqueles ministros dos quais possuem apenas os dons comuns do Espirito Santo.
Ó, se apenas todos os que me ouvem hoje seriamente aplicassem aos seus corações para a prática o que até agora os foi dito! Ó, como existiriam ministros que veriam Satanás, como um raio, cair do céu, e pessoas que achariam a Palavra pregada mais afiada que uma espada de dois gumes e poderosa, através de Deus, para derrubar as fortalezas do Diabo!
