Bio

I started learning Mandarin as part of my undergraduate degree in Oriental Studies (Chinese) at the University of Oxford. In June 2019, I began working as a freelance translator, mostly translating from Simplified Mandarin to English and occasionally from Taiwanese Mandarin into English.

From my degree, I have a basic knowledge of Classical Chinese as well as Chinese history and culture. Since graduating, I have maintained and improved my Chinese skills by consuming as much media as possible, such as music, podcasts, news programmes, reality shows, and dramas. Doing so has given me a better knowledge of different registers, idioms, slang, and cultural references.

While I do not specialise in a particular area of translation, I have had experience in a variety of text types and projects, from subtitling and transcription to translating official documents and manhua. I am also interested in literary translation and have been working on samples in my spare time. In September 2022, I won Comma Press's Emerging Translator Prize and will have my first short story translation published in their next anthology.

I grew up around horses and have a particular interest in anything to do with animal welfare, riding, and environmental issues. As a teenager, I spent a lot of time learning Latin and reading up on Greek and Roman mythology. I also enjoy cooking, reading, and watching television. I recently started learning Su art embroidery, which has been both challenging and fascinating.
