Polish to English: Arc welding of ferrite-austenitic steels - sample General field: Tech/Engineering Detailed field: Metallurgy / Casting
Translation - English Ferrite-austenitic steels, also known as duplex steels, have a mixed microstructure of austenite and ferrite. To a certain degree duplex steels combine the properties of two different types of steel. On one hand they are ferritic and martensitic chromium steels. Thanks to their high chromium content – 18% and more – these steels have comparatively high impact strength as well as very high resistance to stress-corrosion cracking in chloride environment. Their weldability is limited, however. Due to the high cooling rate during the welding process, such steels show a strong tendency for hardening and cold cracking associated with the formation of martensitic microstructure as the weld cools. On the other hand duplex steels are austenitic nickel-chromium steels. Those steels are generally well suited for welding, with good impact strength and great resistance to pitting corrosion caused by chlorides. Their practical elastic modulus and resistance to stress-corrosion cracking are much lower than in chromium steels.
The carbon content of the first ferrite-austenitic (duplex) steels was usually in the region of 0.1 - 0.2%, making them prone to intercrystalline corrosion. To counter this shortcoming, steels with reduced carbon content and addition of nitrogen have been developed. Such materials combine good resistance to intercrystalline and pitting corrosion, good weldability, acceptable mechanical and technological characteristics, as well as better machinability. Duplex steels contain between 20% and 26% chromium, whereas their nickel content is in the region of 3-8%. Nearly all types of duplex steel also contain 1.5-5.5% molybdenum.
