Source text - English As the UK was basking in the sun for what has turned out to be one of the longest and hottest summers on record, Britvic Soft Drinks and Continental Can came on stream with their new high speed canning line and can-making facility at Rugby, Northants.
The Rugby plant, which is on a 16-acre site, was first set up by Beechams in 1982, at a cost of £20m.
To date there are 205 people employed at the factory in a variety of skilled jobs varying from craftsmen of all trades — haulage and material handling specialists to skilled operators controlling a wide variety of processes and machinery.
Shortly after the purchase, the 3-litre squash line was removed, which gave the much-needed room for the installation of the plant's original 33cl 1500cpm canning line that included in-can pasteurizing and, more recently, the addition of a Mead multi-packing operation.
The canning installation at Rugby is to be further updated, when the 1-litre pvc bottling line is transferred to another group factory; this will allow Britvic to install a third canning line on the site and will increase the plant's output to 4,500cpm.
The concept behind the multi-million pound joint venture was to establish a hole-in-the-wall operation for can manufacture.
Preparatory work on Continental's state-of-the-art aluminium can-making plant on land adjoining the Rugby factory began in July 1988. By Christmas an intensive 25-week plant installation programme was underway.
In June initial trials were made on the first of two can-making lines, followed one month later by the first full production of cans for filling and distribution into the trade. The Rugby site is Continental's most modern two-piece can-making plant in the world.
Work commenced last year on the installation of a new, high-speed canning line and warehouse extension at the factory. The 35,000ft2 warehouse extension took six months to build and now brings the total covered area of the Britvic site to 316,000ft2.
Installation of the 1500cpm line began December 1988 and just four months later underwent its first trials. Since the end of June it has been running on a double-shift basis.
The two 1500cpm filling lines enable Rugby to produce almost 180,000 canned soft drinks an hour and this capacity will be further increased when a third 1500cpm line is commissioned in September 1990.
The newly-installed line incorporates the latest technology, including a fully computerized syrup manufacturing process, automatic line sampling and sophisticated process monitoring and fault-finding equipment — all designed to maximize line efficiency.

Знову встановлені лінії, які було виготовлено на основі новітніх технологій, в тому числі, повністю комп'ютеризовано процес виробництва сиропу, автоматизовано процес відбору проб, встановлено унікальну автоматичну систему контролю та виявлення несправності обладнання - все це було розроблено з однією метою, максимально підвищити ефективність роботи підприємства.
