It is impossible to know who you really are until you spend time alone in a cemetery.The headstone was cold against my back, pressing my thin T-shirt into the sweat trickling down my skin. Dusk washed the cemetery of shadows, lending it a quality of between-ness:neither day nor night, but a gray, teary moment. I sat with my legs crossed and the book in my lap. Beneath me, scraggly grass hid my parents’ graves.I brushed dirt of the front cover of the book. It was the size of a paperback novel, so small and insignificant-seeming between my hands. The mahogany leather cover was soft and scuffed from years of use; the color had worn off the corners.The pages used to be gilded, but that was rubbed off, too.Cracking it open, I read the inscription again, whispering it to myself, making it more real.

O crepúsculo inundou o cemitério de sombras, atribuindo-lhe uma condição intermédia: não era nem dia, nem noite, mas um momento cinzento e triste. Eu estava sentada de pernas cruzadas e tinha o livro no colo. Debaixo de mim, a erva irregular escondia as sepulturas dos meus pais.
Sacudi a sujidade da capa do livro. Era do tamanho de um romance de bolso, tão pequeno e insignificante entre as minhas mãos. A capa em couro era macia e estava desgastada pelos anos de uso; a sua cor mogno encontrava-se meia gasta nos cantos. As páginas eram douradas, mas o desgaste também fizera a cor desaparecer. Greetings, inferior one. I am Vordak the Incomprehensible. Who you are doesn't matter. What does matter is my dastardly decision to add the world of book publishing to my growing list of conquests. Without even trying very hard, I have created a book of such unbelievable brilliance that it dwarfs all other literature preceding it through the course of human history. The wisdom contained within these pages is such humongousness that it offers even a piddling piece of pond scum such as yourself the opportunity to one day grow up and rule the world! Muahahahaha!!!
All right, hold on . . . Give me a second, here. The level of blowharded-ness I unleashed in that opening paragraph has left me a bit winded. No less evil, mind you, but winded.
That’s right—I’m evil. Extremely evil. Evil is who and what I am. And as you can see from my awe-inspiring costume, I make no attempts to hide my evilosity from the world at large. I am tremendously proud of my heartless nature, and if you have any hopes of eventually becoming planetary dictator, you, too, will need to embrace your inner evil. I’m not talking “break your mother’s favorite ceramic egg and blame it on your little brother” evil. I’m talking “willing to pull the moon into a collision course with the Earth by means of a powerful, nuclear-powered tractor beam in order to get your way” evil. I’m talking incredibly evil. Worse than your orthodontist.
I have decided to share a portion of my never-ending knowledge with those of you who prove to have “what it takes,” which in this case happens to be £5.99. I realize that seems like quite a bit of money for a book, but when you consider the payoff is possession of all the wealth of human civilization, it’s got to be worth £12.99 easy. Within these pages you’ll find instructions, advice, charts, and illustrations, all of which were carefully crafted for the specific purpose of making the book thicker. I “auditioned” seventeen illustrators before finding one who could meet deadlines while generating artwork I deemed acceptable to include in the book.
I would have done it myself, but I did not want the magnificence of my artistic talent distracting readers from the text.

Sem sequer me esforçar muito, criei um livro de um brilhantismo inacreditável que diminui todos os outros géneros de literatura e coloca o meu livro num patamar superior do percurso da História da humanidade. A sabedoria contida nestas páginas é de uma tal grandeza que oferece até mesmo a um ser insignificante como tu a oportunidade de um dia CRESCER E GOVERNAR O MUNDO! MUAHAHAHAHA!!!
Está bem, aguenta os cavalinhos… dá-me só um segundo. O nível de gabarolice que libertei neste parágrafo de abertura do livro fez-me ficar um pouco sem fôlego. Não sou menos malvado por causa disso, está bem, mas estou sem fôlego. É isso mesmo… Sou malvado. Extremamente malvado. A maldade faz parte de mim.
E como podes verificar pelo meu traje intimidante, não faço qualquer esforço para esconder a minha malvadez do mundo inteiro. Estou tremendamente orgulhoso da minha natureza sem coração e, se tiveres esperança de eventualmente te tornares um ditador a nível mundial, também precisarás de abraçar a tua maldade interior. Não estou a falar de uma maldade como “partir o ovo de cerâmica da tua mãe e culpares o teu irmão mais novo”. Estou a falar de uma maldade do género “estar disposto a desviar a Lua para uma rota de colisão com a Terra com a ajuda de um poderoso raio trator movido a energia nuclear de modo a levares a tua avante”. Estou a falar de uma malvadez inacreditável. Pior do que a de um dentista.
Decidi partilhar uma parte do meu conhecimento infinito com aqueles que provarem ter “o que é preciso”, o que neste caso acaba por ser € 6.85. Compreendo que possa parecer um pouco caro para um livro, mas ao considerarmos que a compensação será possuir toda a riqueza da civilização humana, este livro deve valer pelo menos € 14.86 nas calmas. Nestas páginas vais encontrar instruções, conselhos, gráficos e ilustrações, que foram cuidadosamente arquitetados com o propósito específico de tornar este livro maior. Eu mesmo “entrevistei” dezassete ilustradores antes de encontrar um que pudesse cumprir os prazos enquanto produzia ilustrações que eu considerasse aceitáveis para incluir no meu livro.
Eu tê-lo-ia feito sozinho, mas não queria que a magnificência do meu talento artístico distraísse os leitores do texto.
