Source text - English Wood is a sustainable commodity if managed responsibly. Each species of tree produces timber with different qualities, meaning that there is a vast array of woods available for a wide range of functions.
Types of wood
Timbers are classed as softwoods or hardwoods. This is based not on the actual hardness of the wood, but on the botanical classification of the species. The cell structure is more complex in hardwoods. The trunk of a tree consists of several distinct layers (see opposite and p.184). Trees growing in seasonal environments commence growth each spring, producing the earlywood. Later in the season, the latewood is produced, which is denser, has smaller cells, and is usually darker. This results in well-defined annual rings, whereas tropical trees growing in areas without distinct seasons do not have clear rings. The outer, youngest parts of the trunk form the sapwood and the inner, older parts comprise the heartwood.
Appearance and physical properties dictate a timber's end uses. The appearance is a combination of the wood's grain, texture, and figure (see panel, right). The way in which wood is converted (sawn) can accentuate special kinds of figuring and will also determine its stability (see below). A timber's physical and working qualities are described in many ways (see right) and vary from species to species.
WOOD TERMS
DENSITY
Density is a measure of the weight of a given volume of wood dried to a standard moisture content. Density is often linked with hardness, strength, and ease of working.
DURABILITY
A timber's durability - its resistance to fungal decay - is important in deciding whether it is suitable for outdoor use. Some woods are also notably susceptible (while others are resistant) to insect attack.
FIGURE
Figure is the wood's surface pattern and can be the result of contrasting streaks of colour, conspicuous growth rings, grain pattern, knots, defects, or other natural features.
GRAIN
Grain describes the orientation of the wood's fibres within the tree. Straight grain is where the fibres lie parallel along the trunk. Interlocked grain occurs when the fibres alternate every few years between growing in a left-handed spiral and a right-handed spiral. Spiral grain is where the direction of the spiral is constant. Wavy-grained wood has fibres in regular short waves. Wood can also have irregular grain.
HEARTWOOD
Non-functioning xylem tissue at the centre of the trunk is called heartwood. It is darker than sapwood, more durable, and more resistant to insect attack.
SAPWOOD
The comparatively soft and perishable wood from the outer part of the trunk is called sapwood. While the tree is still alive, this xylem tissue transports water and minerals and stores food. Sapwood thickness varies between species.

Leurs cernes sont bien distincts contrairement aux arbres tropicaux soumis à une saisonnalité peu marquée. À la périphérie du tronc se trouve l’aubier (jeune bois) et plus proche de la moelle du tronc, le bois parfait (le bois le plus ancien).
On choisira d’utiliser un bois en particulier selon ses propriétés physiques et son aspect (son fil, sa texture, sa figure, voir les définitions à droite). Le mode de débit choisi (sciage) peut faire ressortir certains effets du veinage et détermine la stabilité du bois (voir plus bas). Différents termes sont utilisés pour décrire les propriétés physiques et mécaniques du bois (voir à droite), variables dʼune essence à lʼautre.
LEXIQUE DU BOIS
DENSITÉ
La densité du bois sec à l'air désigne le rapport entre sa masse et son volume lorsquʼil est conditionné à un taux d'humidité de référence. La densité est souvent liée à la dureté, la résistance et la facilité de mise en oeuvre.
DURABILITÉ
La durabilité d’un bois désigne sa faculté de résistance aux champignons. Elle détermine s’il peut être utilisé en extérieur. Certains bois sont particulièrement sensibles aux attaques d’insectes xylophages quand d’autres sont plus résistants.
FIGURE
Le veinage désigne les dessins à la surface du bois : stries de couleurs très contrastées, cernes marqués, particularité du fil, nœuds, aspérités ou autres caractéristiques naturelles.
FIL
Le fil du bois désigne la direction générale des fibres à l’intérieur de l’arbre. Il est droit lorsque les fibres sont parallèles à l'axe du tronc. Si elles forment une spirale orientée vers la gauche, puis la droite, en alternant de direction régulièrement, le fil est entrecroisé. Il est tors si la spirale est toujours orientée dans la même direction. Il est ondé si les fibres forment de courtes vagues qui se répètent de façon régulière. Le fil du bois peut aussi être irrégulier.
BOIS PARFAIT
Le bois parfait est un tissu végétal non fonctionnel, situé au centre du tronc. Il est plus foncé, plus durable et résiste mieux aux attaques d’insectes xylophages que lʼaubier.
AUBIER
Situé à la périphérie du tronc, l’aubier est la partie la plus tendre et la moins résistante du bois. Ce tissu végétal vivant transporte la sève et les minéraux des racines aux feuilles. Il stocke aussi les nutriments. Son épaisseur varie d’une essence à l’autre.

Source text - English These tips will help to keep your violin squeaky fresh. Here goes:
Clean your violin with a fine instrument cloth whenever it gets dusty from rosin dust. Otherwise, the strings can get harder to play over time, and it gets harder to clean the instrument the longer your wait in between cleaning.
Temperature – your violin is made of wood. Subjecting it to heat or cold can cause it to go wildly out of tune, or even cause cracks and other serious damage. Make sure that you keep it at a stable temperature as much as possible. Do not expose your violin to direct sunlight for more than a few minutes, even while you’re playing (play under a tent if you have to play outside), and NEVER LEAVE YOUR VIOLIN IN YOUR CAR regardless of time of year.
Re-hair your bow every 6-18 months depending upon how frequently you play. Local violin shops can do this for you. It usually costs in the neighborhood of $50.
Don’t Touch the Horsehair on Your Bow – the oils from your fingers over time can make the hair slippery so that violin rosin no longer sticks. At that point you’ll have to re-hair your bow.

Évitez les variations de température – Sous lʼeffet de la chaleur ou du froid, votre violon peut totalement se désaccorder. Pire, le bois – qui le compose – peut se fissurer. Rangez si possible votre instrument dans un endroit où la température reste stable. Ne lʼexposez jamais directement au soleil plus de quelques minutes, y compris lorsque vous jouez en extérieur (abritez-vous sous une tente si cʼest le cas). Et surtout, ne laissez jamais un violon dans une voiture, quelle que soit la période de lʼannée.
Reméchez votre archet tous les 6 à 18 mois, tout dépend de la fréquence à laquelle vous jouez. Un luthier pourra s’en charger. En moyenne, comptez autour de 45 euros pour le reméchage simple d’un archet de violon ou d’alto.
Évitez de toucher les crins de l’archet. Sinon, la colophane risque de ne plus adhérer aux crins, rendus glissants par la graisse de vos doigts. Votre archet devra alors être reméché.
