strati di abbandono

Italian to English Art/Literary Archaeology Foreword to book on Archaeology at Herculaneum
This is the context.
"... sono gli anni in cui Ostia viene sterrata in tutta fretta per mettere in luce la fase più monumentale, asportando senza tanto riguardo i livelli di vita meno appariscenti e gli strati di abbandono."
The part before and after are on different subjects, so there are no further details on the strata or even on Ostia. This is a passing reference. The period is the 1930s and fascism.
I can only guess. I have pencilled in waste strata. The author of the book, who didn't write this in the foreword can also only guess: an area abandoned and then reused.

At this site, it is necessary to differentiate between three distinct zones: the post-abandonment layer which consists of the physical remains of the buildings and the subsequent soil deposition, the former living surface inside the buildings, and the below-floor deposition. Each of these zones is the result of both natural and cultural formation processes

That looks good Judy however, strati di distruzione would be rubble. I think it is the layers where a place has been abandoned with nothing built on top of the old buildings, where the land has been left fallow as it were. Of course I'm guessing still.
JudyC Apr 18, 2013:
possibly rubble layers

Oh definitely but the layers are horizontal and were once areas on the surface! They were removed very fast because Mussolini wanted to use the more magnificent remains beneath for propaganda purposes. Unfortunately Peter I can get as far as you, what I need is certainty. It isn't just a figure of speech by this writer, but a technical term as this Google shows:
https://www.google.it/search?source=ig&hl=it&rlz=&=&q="strat...
The Google gives loads of articles found in these "strati" without ever saying what they are precisely. For example backfill and waste are different things.
Peter Shortall Apr 18, 2013:
Stratigraphy (archaeology) Rather than "area", doesn't it refer to layers in the soil? (Look up the archaeological concept of stratigraphy). Perhaps they're layers made up of waste material or backfill (e.g. ancient rubbish pits or middens) which were removed as they were assumed in the 1930s to be of no interest - though nowadays archaeologists are much more careful to preserve evidence!
