The only equivalent to the tonal slipperiness and layering of comedy on top of drama that I am aware of in other films available to be seen in New York in that era is the work of Jean Renoir, a director who was, not surprisingly, another influence on Cassavetes’ development. (Boudu Saved From Drowning was the inspiration for Minnie and Moskowitz and the servants’ dinner scene in The Rules of the Game morphs into the construction-workers’ spaghetti breakfast in A Woman Under the Influence.) The Rules of the Game has the same multiple-minded relationship to the experiences it presents that many of Cassavetes’ films do. For both filmmakers, it is possible to hold more than one thought in mind, more than one idea about what is taking place, more than one emotional relationship to what is on screen at the same time in the same situation.
