Faces will become the most extended—and painful—illustration of this compositional and decompositional process in all of cinema.) That is the deep meaning of Shadows’ racial conceit, which Cassavetes told me he was disappointed that almost no one who wrote about the film seemed to understand. He said critics got hung up on the idea of a character “being black or white,” when the very point of the film was the fluidity of identity. Shadows is about the irresolution of its characters’ identities, about an ontological sketchiness that can never be gotten beyond—certainly not about replacing it with the false (and superficial) clarity of a racial typology. It is about identity as a temporal, provisional, forever-unfinished process—not as a completable product.

de deconstrucción
Yo diría "este proceso de composición y descomposición", aunque para evitar la mala interpretación de "descomposición" (aplicable a algunas películas aunque ese no es el tema :D), quizá "construcción y deconstrucción" sea más adecuado.
