German term

Schwimmschuhe

German to English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation
The ones in my text are described as 2.3 metres in length. Here is a link to a different page which must surely show the item in question:
https://www.lr-online.de/lausitz/luckau/ueber-den-schwieloch...
Most images on Google show shoes for swimmers.
I have found a couple of non-ENS pages with suggestions and have a backstop solution.
Thanks in advance.

@Lancashireman I think I haven't posted this one (though it's part of the list at the bottom of the other pages I linked to):

Lancashireman (asker) Nov 3, 2018:
Thanks to all contributors It might have been better to post Schwimmschuhlaufen (i.e. the activity) as the source term, because I believe it is possible to work back from there to the name of the footwear. It’s obviously not any kind of ‘running’, as the videos show. Mere ‘floating’ doesn’t do justice to the sport either, as the intention is clearly to move across the water, albeit at a very ponderous rate. I can see the resemblance to ‘cross-country skiing’ with the use of the buoyant ‘ski poles’. However, I also see a danger here of confusion with the high-speed sport of ‘water skiing’. To make the contrast clear between Schwimmschuhlaufen and Wasserskilaufen, I think we have to call the former water walking. I came to the conclusion that the ‘Schuhe’ element (‘shoes’ or ‘boots’) could be bypassed in the translation by the simple addition of the suffix -er (by analogy with sneakers and waders). In the final version of the text, the noun form I chose was water walkers.

No worries Here's a better one RE BBC and Edinburgh: http://buoyancyshoes.blogspot.com

These are all, well, no more than prototypes.

I think the patents really are a good start. This one I had posted:
https://patents.google.com/patent/US5120249A/en

Now, please see the first image shown here:
https://patents.google.com/patent/US3027576A/en

That's what Lancashireman posted, IMO.

This here's a non-ENS U.S. patent--at a time when GT wasn't really around =):
https://patents.google.com/patent/US4527984A/en

All of them contain drawings that are two or three decades old, i.e., while there may not be one term for this, it can't be said that there aren't ENS sources to choose from.

@Bjorn No, somehow managed to read your post and miss them completely, sorry :/
Björn Vrooman Nov 2, 2018:
@Mair Did you not see the two links I posted? BBC and MESA?
Mair A-W (PhD) Nov 2, 2018:
buoyancy shoe (when spelt correctly) also has EN refs?
Björn Vrooman Nov 2, 2018:
I'm torn here I don't like floating at all. These are floating shoes:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JR27UUssWoE

Ha ha.

I can find some support for Ramey's answer:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/2936199.stm
http://alliance.sdccmesa.com/archives/7097

But I prefer herbalchemist's ski idea (which I thought of too, considering the shape of those "shoes"). I am curious why no one has mentioned this link:
https://patents.google.com/patent/US5120249A/en

It's from 1991(!). And it's a near-perfect match to Alison's gneven link (see Details there). Water walkers, as mentioned in another patent, is an idea from 1985, though I have some issues with calling it walking. It's more like cross-country skiing, which makes them cross-water skis.

Also, these are the only two answers I can find ENS references for. That was the whole point of the question.

Best wishes
Mair A-W (PhD) Nov 1, 2018:
Jesus shoes ... walk on water with these ...
Ramey Rieger (X) Nov 1, 2018:
Some ideas foot rafts
walk-on-water footwear
flatboat footwear
And then there's bouyancy shoes https://www.quora.com/What-is-buoyancy-shoe
Lancashireman (asker) Nov 1, 2018:
Non-ENS = not convincing as native English sources

As I've said, I have a backstop, but I didn't want to anticipate any answers that might be offered. I am hoping for something better than 'swimming shoes'. They may be 'inflatable shoes', but equally they may be made from cork or some other buoyant material.

floating shoes?
water walking shoes?
canoe shoes?
Or maybe something with boots?

cross-water walking skis

A Slovenian (admittedly not necessary an ENS), is devloping similar items and calls them 'cross-water walking skis' (looks like cross-country skiing on the water).
Note from asker:
I am wary of including 'ski' in the translation, as this morpheme is too much associated with the high-speed sport of water skiing. This was the only answer to include the walking element.

Thanks. I guess the users are hoping to do more than just stay afloat - and await rescue :-)

agree philgoddard : Lots of possibilities, but a literal translation works fine.

Thank you, I do not think there is a standard term for this equipment just yet, so it is really up to the translator...

If someone had to buy these, what would they look for?
I'm thinking "floating" is the keyword. There are a variety of swimming/aqua/water shoes available. But none of them look like these floating shoes.
Note from asker:
Thanks. I guess the users are hoping to do more than just stay afloat - and await rescue :-) Also, we can't be sure that they are inflatable and not just made of naturally buoyant material.

Thanks for buoyancy shoes. Sounds more like a military than a leisure concept, though :-( Some other good ideas in the Discussion Box, especially walk-on-water shoes.

Might sound fun to sports people (not me).

A cross between a stand-up paddle board and water skis.

Actually, "paddle skis" seems to be a common designation for this type of sports equipment.

There's a video/photo, but it's new or not popular in the US (2016).
https://www.ski.com/blog/one-plank-or-two-new-riverskis-enli...
In recent years, we’ve seen daring skiers bring their two-planked set-ups to tow-in surfing sites, and just this week, we learned of a new company making stand-up paddle skis for “river skiing.”

As you can see by my previous Kudoz answers, I totally agree with a literal translation that doesn't have substantial meaning in any predominantly English-speaking society if it's too difficult to find an equivalent ;)

I mean marketed. Brand is ABH2O. That's the most I can do.
Based on my wanderings around the WWW, I actually assumed that Wasserschuhe was a poor translation from a SE Asian language.

Inventive! I am wary of including 'ski' in the translation, as this morpheme is too much associated with the high-speed sport of water skiing. paddles > poles?

agree Birgit Gläser : in view of stand-up paddle boards imO the best solution

Thanks, Birgit. Not sure us nerds are the best ppl to ask. But I predict we will see more of these as SUP is supposed to be the next "revolution" in water sports!

More info on the history of the product in your first link

You won't be able to use this, but it may still be of interest. The original design was going to be marketed in the US under the name Seawalks.

Thanks for Seawalks. I think the term used has to include the element of 'walk[ing]'.

Thanks for Beachwalker. This put me onto the idea of 'walker' also being a name for the footwear.
