Italian term
ricavi sostitutivi
Proposed translations
substitute revenue
Additional revenue
alternative revenue
They are all appendixes for applications to the Ministry of economic development for grants for R&D projects. So you have to say whether the project could generate additional income or alternative income (substitute or replacement income which would mean the same thing) for whatever production process the project would replace. What comes to mind would be windmills instead of coal mines to generate alternative income from the alternative wind energy.
The grants tend to mention the word sustainable.

: I don't see how this is different to Alison's answer.

I think it is slightly more appropriate in the context of sustainable development. I did suggest it in the discussion before Alison posted. Then when I found the actual context, which nobody else has I thought I'd post it.

: We don't have the full context, but this is economics, not accounting. It's about replacing lost income for a region or industry.

We do have the full context: per ciascun anno del periodo dianzi indicato, ricavi *incrementali/ sostitutivi*

: Phil the full context is available. I have given it. It is about R&D projects which could generate alternative income to existing income, not really lost income. "incrementali" is strictly add-on, "sostitutivi" is strictly alternative or...? :-)

I never claimed it was lost income & *ricavi incrementali/ sostitutivi* later on in the text is not strictly an alternative, but an add-on revenue stream..//The two quotes are: di ricavi aggiuntivi/ and incrementali/ sostitutivi, so alt. needs to fit both
