Yeah, this word does create problems though it is not difficult to 'feel' it.While putting in translation it will change its shades according to the 'subject' of the given sentence.In fact, there is no neutral term in Indian languages for this concept which may be independent of 'subject'.SWAYAM may be proper in some context but may not be so always. If you get some work done by others ,you cannot use SWAYAM. So, I SUGGEST NIJEE ROOP MEN BECAUSE 'MANUALLY' MEANS THAT MACHINES WERE NOT USED.

Just a suggestion...
May not be the best one, But I think it carries the meaning in the given context and has no chances of getting confused with any of the Swayam=auto combinations.
