The effect of phase controlled SCR firing is that conducted current lags the applied voltage and generates lagging VAR power.
The SCR’s in static converters are phase controlled.
Any phase controlled conversion system, used to produce adjustable voltage DC power, must be supplied with an out-of-phase component of power called Volt Ampere Reactive (VAR).
Phase control means the firing angle of the SCR’s can be adjusted to conduct at any selected point on the AC voltage waveform as opposed to consistently conducting at the zero points on the waveform.
