What I'm asking is, is there something else in the story that makes you think this must be translated in some special way? Is съела supposed to sound the way kids talk? For instance, in chess the correct terminology is взять фигуру противника, but most kids say съесть.

How do you know that I'm not already translating the gold medal as... a gold medal? :)
A few pages earlier the text reads "...в десятом классе был предтсавлен к сербряной медали, но в конце года стало известно, на его счастье, серебряные медали заменили специальным аттестатом...."
So I already need to distinguish the old gold & silver medals from the new certificate of merit.
