Spanish term

"...que por poco ya no la cuenta"

How would you translate this to English? The line comes from a person who is relating a story about a friends suicide attempt and the person survived

Discussion

worldenglish (asker) Feb 4, 2008:
The narrator is describing how the person tried to commit suicide by taking pills, then said "que por poco ya no la cuenta, afortunadamente se dieron cuenta" then went on to say they quickly took the person to the hospital

Can you provide the full context?

he almost didn't live to tell the tale

"tell the story" is good, but I think in this context of having a narrow escape from a dangerous situation "tale" would be more widely used

Thank you, this seems to flow better

he almost didn't live to tell the story

It's a common phrase to explain when someone has been in a risky situation or accident.
