From a wine and food pairing note:
Acompaña carnes rojas, asados de cordero, buey *a la piedra*, caza, quesos muy curados y azules.

I find tons of google hits on the phrase, including a couple of videos that show the meat being cooked tableside. Is it Ox meat on a hot stone? Any Native Spanish eater's input would be much appreciated!

You cut it up into small pieces (normally comes in strips already) and cook it as much or as little as you want. A piece of lard (sebo) is provided.

I was toying with seared/grilled ox-meat (tho I like stone-grilled beef) for succinctness sake. Is the end result cooked all the way through, or just v. rare? I agree w/all who say "ox" sounds a bit odd, but in this instance it might lend a hint of exoticism to the pairing note. I'll have to chew on that one, har har.

I have a notion that I read an article (in a Cambridge ESOL exam, of all things!) saying that this fashion started in Australia. Any comments from there? As for the technique, it can be either a machine, sold in yer local Carrefour, or v hot earthenware..

cooked on a hot stone

In Portugal, we have it too. It is ox meat (like a steak) and you have a very hot stone and you cook the food iin front of you at the table

agree Carol Gullidge : yes, ususlly electric, the "stone" is is flat, smooth and made of stone, and is either beside the table, or on top of it. Becoming increasingly popular
