Discussion

Christine Walsh May 15, 2011:
In case it's of any help, the 'correct' term down here is now 'pueblos originarios', but most people still use 'indios' or 'indígenas'. Personally I think one can be 'too correct', and this kind of elaborate term often falls out of use and/or is replaced by another.

indigenous inhabitants

I don't think you need both native and indigenous, since both mean the same thing. Also I am inclined to agre with MedTrans that 'aboriginal peoples' is used mainly in an Australian context. 'Aborigines' is considered belittling by aboriginal people themselves.

indigenous peoples/native peoples & aborigenies

Me parece que sólo usamos aborigenies cuando nos referimos a los pueblos nativos de Australia. Los demás serían indigenous peoples/ native peoples/ native americans

I realise that native americans are the ones from the territories of the USA, and not argentina, I was just giving it as another example
neutral Bubo Coroman (X) : not "aborigenes" as in Jaime's comment, but "aborigines"

Indians and aborigines

personally I would put exactly the same in English as in Spanish because Spanish also has the word "indígena" but the text instead uses "indios", so there is no justification for writing "indigenous peoples" in English.

You asked what is the difference in meaning between indigenous peoples and aborigines. Semantically there is hardly any difference but there is a big difference in the usage because "aborigine" is not considered politically correct to use. This is explained here:

1) Used as adjectives, the terms aboriginal and indigenous share almost similar definition, that is pertaining to people originating and occurring in a specific area.

2) Although the two are synonymous, indigenous is preferred to aboriginal as the former has established acceptable definite criteria and is considered politically-correct, while the latter is deemed offensive for its attached meaning with colonization.
