Spanish term

diámetro de tierra/campo

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering Weapons
Hi everyone

I am doing a translation of a court case involving a weapon and there is a section about the size of the weapon in which it refers to:

"el diámetro de tierra del alma del cañón"

It later refers to:

"el diámetro de campo del referido alma del cañón"

From the measurements given it appears that the second is larger than the first, so it might just be the internal and external diameters of the barrel hole but it would be good to get an expert opinión on this. Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Thanks

Penny

Discussion

Charles Davis Sep 17, 2014:
Confusing I am sure Peter is right and that what they mean is land diameter vs. groove diameter, the former meaning the basic internal diameter of the barrel before the internal grooves are cut and the latter being the distance between the bottoms of the grooves. So the groove diameter will be slightly more than the land diameter.

In your text they're using "diámetro de tierra" to mean land diameter and "diamétro de campo" (slightly larger) to mean groove diameter. What is a bit confusing is that in the Wikipedia page the term "tierra" is not used at all, and "diámetro entre campos" means land diameter, i.e. the smaller of the two.

I think they are misusing the term "campo". In normal terminology "estrías" and "campos" are distinguished: the "campos" are the bits between the "estrías", where the diameter is smaller. See here, for example, a bit more than halfway down:
http://www.monografias.com/trabajos95/balistica-criminal/bal...

So using "diámetro de campo" for "groove diameter" is wrong, though that must be what they mean by it. "Diámetro de campo" or "entre campos" ought to mean land diameter.

I think you might point this out to the client.
