I am translating a service and maintenance manual for a vacuum packing machine.
There are several instances where the phrase "abrir en cárter" is used, referring to a certain way of opening the machine to work on it. I cannot find attestations of this usage in Google searches, and I am completely unfamiliar with this usage. To me a "cárter" is a crankcase, which has nothing to do wtih this machine. Examples:
This manual might have been translated from Catalan to Castilian, if that makes any difference.

(to) open in the housing/case
"Cárter" has several different meanings, among them crankcase, but also: case, housing, sump, oil pan.
I think in this case they are referring to an opening in the housing, or case, of the bottling machine.
