alternancia

Spanish to English Art/Literary Music Musical terms
I have not been able to find the word in any of the dictionaries I have at hand, or in the Merriam-Webster's online.
A Google search yielded some hits, and in all instances the word was used in very lofty subjects. Most of the Web sites where the word appears are from non-English speaking countries, but I did find one from Brown University and another one from Harvard:

Alternancy symmetry: A unified viewpoint

In my case, I just finished translating a music book from Spanish into English, and the Spanish word "alternancia" appeared once, referring to a song structure where two styles of music alternate with each other:
"Con el paso del tiempo, la guaracha abandonó su estructura de copla y pregón, incorporó un coro cantado, perdió la ALTERNANCIA y adoptó el formato de la canción binaria."
I did not think much of it and translated is as "alternancy", but now that I am proofreading the project the Word spellchecker did not recognize it, so I dedided to research it. I also posted the question in the English-English pair

But the switching that Geiss enjoys can take other forms as well.
It is precisely on this latter level where we find the most important justification forthe elaboration of the Six Suites for the viola. The form of the suite, itself, as well as thetype of notation used by Bach (with the continuous **alternation** of monody andpolyphony) are aspects that undoubtedly pertain to the very nature of the viola dagamba and its history. Moreover, we could also state that these elements are

Has been suggested for your equivalent monolingual English question, but now I can quote from the Oxford Dictionary of Music to support my answer here, and the other guy's answer in the monolingual English query!

"Name applied in early 18th cent. mus. in dance style to a contrasting middle section (later called Trio). Sometimes used of a whole comp., apparently implying that the 2 sections may be alternated at will."
