it is a species of crayfish, but it is endemic to México (as your on context says it). This solves the problem of letting the reader know it is a type of crayfish, but not just any regular crayfish.

You could write acocil by itself, though the reader might not know what it is.

using the scientific name presents the problem that it complicates the text (the original is really in layman terms). Also, there are two different species that are called acocil:

agree John Speese : That is a problem with common names in any language, but at least your choices are limited to different spp. of crayfish rather than totally unrelated organisms, so without further context, I'd stick with acocil crayfish and let it go at that.

Los acociles se localizan en las orillas de los lagos, encontrando refugio entre la densa capa de vegetación acuática que ahí se presenta. Es una especie ovípara de talla pequeña que pertenecen al orden decapoda; presenta una coloración café. Al igual que todos los crustáceos, esta especie presenta cambios de muda a través de cada uno de sus estadíos. Se alimenta de pequeños invertebrados, detritus y vegetación acuática. Estos invertebrados son muy apreciados por los lugareños de la región, ya que son utilizados como complemento alimenticio en determinadas épocas del año.
