Source text - English Since the beginning of the 2000s design and the creative industries in China have come to define a new productive horizon for an official restructuring of economic policies, large scale urban making, as much as a rejuvenation of cultural prowess with Chinese characteristics. Notwithstanding the dooming legacies of the country’s rapid-fire development, a more nuanced image of change has emerged over the past decade through a transitional perspective of development whose social and economic configuration is made urgent by escalating income gaps, deregulated migratory fluxes, and the unabated challenges posed by environmental depletion in both urban and rural areas.
Projects of urban and rural revitalization and preservation have become purview of authorities on a national expanse, signalling an increased preoccupation with the erosion of both the physical and social dimensions of ‘place’ which is vital to securing stability and cohesion. What draws shared significance to these initiatives is their detouring across the remedial scale of actions that can rekindle broken or obsolete relations of production, inheritance and place into novel processes of social mutuality, civic care and eventually productive co-dependency.
Projects presented here are implemented through second tier cities and remoter regions, testing integrated strategies of revival founded on localized community empowerment, cultural bonding, and on small-scale ecologies of production rooted in long-lasting histories of vernacular traditions. The regenerative ethos of current experimentalism in architecture and design practices speaks of intellectual ambitions appreciative of craft-knowledge and grassroots intelligence, rediscovered in the vocabularies of amateurism, traditional aesthetic and building canons, the use of found materials and natural resources, and therefore a rejuvenation of shared values for the edification of a new-found commonwealth for future generations.

政府开始越来越多地将开支投入到城市与农村地区的复兴保护项目，并关注物理与社会意义上“地方”的流失，以确保稳定性与连贯性。然而这些项目对修复尺度的思考始终未能跳出生产、传承、地方三者之间破碎或陈旧的关系，上升到社会共性、公民关怀、以及最终三者良性依存的全新高度上。

Source text - Chinese 而传统智慧城市建设中，由于细分智慧应用领域众多，建设内容广，城市在规划发展建设中容易失焦；另外，地区行业发展水平和资源禀赋不同也限制了智慧城市整体建设落地；其次，投资规模大、商业模式不清晰，使用技术缺乏统一标准，数据信息碎片化严重，也使得智慧城市建设在推进时无法有效形成社会合力，阻碍智慧城市发展，挑战城市管理者、建设者和经营者的智慧。
Translation - English Traditional practice of developing smart city encompasses numerous segmentations of smart applications. Such a wide range of field results in a lack of focus in urban planning and development. What's more, disparity in regional industrial capabilities and resources hinders holistic construction of smart city. Despite the large scale of investment, it is still very difficult to foster an effective social synergy to develop smart city, due to unclear business model, lack of technical standardization, and too fragmented digital information, which have become nerve-wracking to the city managers, builders and operators.
Under such circumstances, the central government put forward “New Type Smart City" strategy as a new direction for city development. The strategy calls for a full integration of next-gen IT technology and city development, to attain inter-connectivity among cities. Digital information technology should be used to promote a fine-grained development in city operation and management.
