Source text - Russian Письмо-рекомендация компании Total War с идеей для создания нового проекта игры
Доброго времени суток! Меня зовут Сизов Олег. Я живу в России и являюсь студентом-историком выпускного курса в ДВФУ (Дальневосточного Федерального Университета).
С самых ранних лет я увлекаюсь играми от Total War. С такими играми, как Medieval 2, Rome и Empire, непосредственно связаны мои детство и юность. Возможно, именно благодаря этому увлечению я и поступил в университет на исторический факультет. Спасибо вам больше за эти восхитительные проекты, которые, несомненно, стали культовыми для многих жителей не только России, но и всего СНГ пространства.
Однако, когда я поступил в университет и увлекся исторической наукой, разобрался в ней, у меня возник вопрос: почему нет ни одной игры от компании Total War, посвященной Восточной Европе? К сожалению, большинство игр, которые существуют и продолжают выходить, посвящены Средиземноморью и Западной Европе. Конечно же история этих стран невероятна, а игры получаются шедевральными! Но очень не хватает в легендарном списке ваших игр увидеть полноценный проект, посвященный именно Восточной Европе. Я – настоящий фанат и знаю, что в игре Medieval 2 Total War есть дополнение Teutonic Campaign, которое как раз посвящено истории Восточной Европы. Но мне, как фанату, хотелось бы новой, полноценной игры, а не дополнения. В связи с этой мыслью у меня появилась идея проекта, который бы идеально подошел для воплощения моего желания в реальность. И я захотел поделиться этой идеей с вами! Для создания такой игры вы могли бы взять период истории Восточной Европы с 1360 г. по 1390 г.! Сейчас я подробно объясню вам, почему этот период максимально подходит для создания такого проекта.
Во-первых, в это время Русские земли (которые должны стать главной территорией в этой игре) находятся в состоянии политической раздробленности. Это позволяет нам ввести в игру множество фракций, как основных, так и второстепенных, что необходимо для начальной стадии игры. Более того, этими фракциями являлись бы многочисленные русские княжества и племена соседних народов, которые сильно отличались друг от друга не только политическим устройством (монархии, вечевые республики, боярские олигархии и т.д.) но религиозно и культурно! (языческие племена, православные княжества, католические государства и т. д.). В общем, огромное пространство для творчества! Основными же фракциями, которыми сможет управлять игрок, станут крупнейшие государства этого региона того времени:
1. Московское княжество. В то время – главный претендент на объединение русских земель, мощнейшее государство со своей уникальной культурой, политическим устройством и историческим путем. Его лидером в 1359 году становится легендарный Дмитрий Иванович Донской – храбрый полководец и гениальный тактик, прославившийся победой над ханом Золотой Орды Мамаем на Куликовом поле. Столица Московского княжества Москва – один из крупнейших экономических и культурных центров Восточной Европы. Это княжество было настолько богато, что могло запросто покупать другие княжества! Отличительной чертой этого государства стала укоренившаяся монархия, опирающаяся на московское боярство. Так же МК – это центр православной культуры. Культурно МК стала носителем сплава из повлиявшей на неё культуры монгольских завоевателей и коренной, восточно-славянской, русской культуры (проявлялось в одежде, стиле, войске и т. д.). Главная задача в этот период – выйти из-под зависимости Золотой Орды и собрать вокруг себя как можно больше русских земель.
2. Великое Княжество Литовское (ВКЛ). Великое Княжество Литовское – главный конкурент Москвы в объединении русских земель, самое крупное государство Восточной Европы того времени, представлявшее собой союз, некую конфедерацию западных русских княжеств, литовских племен и других народов под властью грозных литовских князей-язычников, ведущих род от легендарного Миндовга. Это государство возникло только в XIII веке, но за такой короткий период набрало невероятную мощь! С 1345 года ВКЛ правит великий князь Ольгерд Гедиминович – очень интересный и непростой персонаж. Его главная идея: заручиться поддержкой православного русского населения (для этого он сам принимает православие) и выступить объединителем всех русских земель. Таким образом, он вступает в противоборство с Москвой и включает в состав ВКЛ огромные территории южных русских земель (в том числе и древнюю столицу Киевской Руси – Киев!), одерживая победы над монголами. В Ольгерде видят реального кандидата на роль лидера объединенного русского государства! Однако, проблема заключается в том, что в ВКЛ очень сильны позиции католичества, которое стремиться объединить Литву с Польшей (что сделает сын Ольгерда – Ягайло). Какой путь выбрать – пусть выберет сам игрок! Вместе с Ольгердом правит его брат Кейстут – язычник. Он в хороших отношениях с братом и управляет западными границами государства, сдерживая натиск крестоносцев. Однако, если игрок выберет католический путь – это неизбежно вызовет конфликт с Кейстутом. Отличительные черты ВКЛ – это мультикультурализм (литовское язычество на севере, православие на востоке и католицизм на западе!) и уникальное политическое устройство (ВКЛ – конфедерация земель без жесткой власти монарха/добровольное объединение). Ольгерд умирает в 1377 году и к власти приходит Ягайло. Эта дата могла бы стать некой дилеммой, когда игрок может выбрать свой дальнейший путь: либо продолжать опираться на православное русское население, или пойти на запад и сблизиться с католической Польшей. Такая возможность изменить историю – самая прекрасная черта игр Total War!
3. Западная Золотая Орда. Западная Золотая Орда – фактический правитель всех русских земель. Этот статус она обрела после монгольского завоевания Руси в 1240 году. Однако, с каждым годом её власть слабеет, а на территории русских земель вырастают мощные государства, которые грезят скинуть ненавистное Иго монголов. Правит Западной Золотой Ордой – полководец Мамай. Будучи очень хитрым политиком, он стремится к всеобъемлющей власти. Главная его проблема – это набирающее силу Московское княжество. К тому же Мамай – не чингизид (не потомок Чингисхана), что делает его положение шатким. Для завоевания авторитета у знати и укрепления власти ему необходимо привести к покорности русские земли, а значит – разгромить Москву! Золотая Орда – мусульманское государство, основой которого является кочевое устройство. Существует это государство исключительно за счет дани русских земель и военной добычи. У Золотой Орды – непревзойденное войско, ядром которого является монгольская конница. Именно эти отряды стали главной силой, подчинившей Чингисхану половину мира! Также, Золотой Орде подчиняются множество других сильных русских княжеств, недовольных Москвой и желающих проучить её за высокомерие (Рязанское княжество, Нижегородское княжество и т. д.).
4. Новгородская вечевая республика. Это государство представляет собой уникальное явление всей русской истории! Здесь сложился неповторимый вечевой строй, благодаря которому власть принадлежала обычному народу. Главный орган управления Новгорода – это вече. На нем решались все важные вопросы и даже приглашался князь, который был исключительно воеводой и не представлял из себя политической силы. Новгород владел огромными территориями, что являлось одновременно как плюсом, так и минусом для этого государства. Хоть земли Новгорода и были обширны, их плодородие оставляло желать лучшего (постоянная нехватка хлеба). Но новгородцы компенсировали этот недостаток искусным ремеслом и торговлей с западными державами (Швеция, Ганзейский союз, ВКЛ и др.). За счет этого Новгородская республика разбогатела: сам Новгород был одним из богатейших и красивейших городов Европы, а новгородское боярство могло бросить вызов даже боярам Москвы! Хоть и Новгородская республика преимущественно православная, на её территории огромное влияние имеют различные ереси и католическая церковь, что является постоянным источником нестабильности. Масло в огонь подливает и само политическое устройство Новгорода: постоянные конфликты между партиями делают положение республики менее устойчивым, чем у других крупных княжеств. А различные финно-угорские племена (чудь, меря и т.д.) постоянно стремятся отделиться от Новгорода, который фактически является их покровителем и собирает с них дань. Также угрозу для Новгорода представляет Псковская республика. Хоть и политическое устройство этих двух вечевых республик было одинаковым, Псков постоянно выступал против Новгорода при поддержке Москвы. Также на землю Новгорода покушается сама Москва и немецкие рыцари-крестоносцы! Но у Республики есть все шансы на преодоление этих трудностей и постепенное возвышение, как будущего центра русских земель!
5. Нижегородско-Суздальское княжество. Мощный конкурент Москвы в борьбе за объединение русских земель. Ему покровительствует Золотая Орда, опираясь на него, как на противовес Московскому княжеству. Правит им князь Андрей Константинович, сын могучего князя Константина. Экономическую мощь княжества составляет торговля по Волге. Это государство невероятно возвысилось в XIV Веке и имеет все шансы на лидерство в гонке за объединение всех русских земель!
6. Тверское княжество. Это древнее княжество с центром в городе Тверь некогда было самым могущественным претендентом на свержение Ига и объединение русских земель. Но, после 1327 года, когда Тверь была предательски сожжена московским князем после анти монгольского восстания, Тверское княжество было сильно отброшено назад. Главный козырь этого государства – его военная мощь! Тверь имела сильную армию и пользовалась авторитетом среди других княжеств. Постепенно возвращая свое положение лидера и находясь между самыми сильными княжествами (ВКЛ, Новгород и Москва), Тверское княжество за счет мудрой политики имеет все шансы на лидерство в гонке за объединение русских земель и, конечно же, на возмездие Москве за нанесенные обиды!
7. Ливонский Орден. Ливонский Орден – это государство-завоеватель, государство-чужак, и государство-покоритель! Оно создано фанатиками-католиками феодалами, которые стремятся подчинить себе все русские земли, став их владельцами и обратив местное население в католицизм. Имея отличную военную организацию, экономическую мощь и религиозный пыл, немецкие рыцари-крестоносцы из своего плацдарма в Прибалтике (столица – Рига) способны покорить все русские земли и стать новыми хозяевами Восточной Европы!
Создание нечто подобного стало бы ни с чем не сравнимым подарком для всех фанатов Total War и, возможно, имело бы огромный коммерческий успех, так как представленный период стал бы интересен любому человеку, интересующемуся историей! Тем более период Средневековья пользуется у фанатов вашей серии игр особым успехом (Attila, Shogun 2, Medieval 2 и другие). Ну и нельзя забывать о фанатах из самой Восточной Европы (которых должно быть не мало!).
Под этим текстом и приложу карту русских земель этого времени, где указаны все перечисленные мною государства. Еще раз благодарю вашу прекрасную компанию за все созданные игры и желаю вам удачи! Я буду очень рад обратной связи от вас, даже если это будет критика. Надеюсь, этот текст дойдет до места назначения.

Translation - English A letter of recommendation with an idea of creating new game project for Total War Company
Good day to you! My name is Sizov Oleg. I live in Russia. I am a graduate of History Department of FEFU (Far Eastern Federal University).
From a very early age I have been fond of Total War games. Such games as Medieval 2, Rome and Empire are directly related to my childhood and adolescence. So, maybe, that is why I entered the university at the History Department. I express my gratitude to your company for these splendid projects, which, no doubt, have become iconic for many people not only from Russia, but from CIS countries.
However, when I entered the university and became keen on history, got to the bottom of it, I began to wonder: Why is there no Total war game devoted to Eastern Europe? Unfortunately, most of the games that are and will be produced are focused on Western Europe. Sure thing, the history of these countries is astonishing, and the games are real masterpieces! Yet your list of legendary games lacks a comprehensive project that would be based on the history of Eastern Europe. As a true geek, I know about Medieval 2: Total War™ Kingdoms with the Teutonic Campaign devoted to the history of Eastern Europe. But as a fan, I would like to see a new game, not an edition. In this regard, I got an idea of a project that would live out my dream. And I am eager to share it! To create such a game, you could take the period of Eastern European history from 1360 to 1390! Now I will explain in detail why this period is the most suitable for creating the project.
First, at this time the Russian territory (It should be the main territory in the game) is in a state of political fragmentation. This makes it possible to add a number of factions — major and minor — that is significant for the initial stage. Moreover, these factions would be represented by numerous Russian principalities and neighboring tribes, which differed greatly from each other not only in their political structure (monarchies, veche republics, boyar oligarchies, etc.), but religiously and culturally (pagan tribes, Orthodox principalities, papal states and etc.). A huge space for imagination! The main playable factions would be the largest states on this territory of that time:
1. The Grand principality of Moscow. The main contender for the unification of the Russian lands, a powerful state with its own indigenous culture, unique political structure and historical path at that time. In 1359 Dmitry Ivanovich Donskoy, a brave warlord and a brilliant tactician, who gained his fame for the victory over the Khan of the Golden Horde Mamai on the Kulikovo field, became the head of it. Moscow, a capital of The Grand principality of Moscow, is one of the largest economic and cultural hubs in Eastern Europe. This principality was so rich that it could easily buy other principalities! A hallmark of this state was a deep-rooted monarchy, supported by the Moscow boyars. The GPM is the center of Orthodox culture as well. The GPM became a cultural patron of a mixture of the Tatar-Mongolian conquerors’ culture that influenced it and of the indigenous East Slavic Russian culture (manifested itself in apparel, military structure and so on and force). The main challenge was to get out of the hand of the Golden Horde and unite as many Russian regions as possible.
2. The Grand Duchy of Lithuania (the GDL). The Grand Duchy of Lithuania is Moscow's main competitor in the unification of Russian territory, the largest state in Eastern Europe of that time, a union or a kind of confederation of Western Russian principalities, Lithuanian tribes and other peoples under the rule of formidable Lithuanian pagan dukes descended from the legendary Mindaugas. It was founded just in the XIII century, but for such a short period of time it gained incredible power! Since 1345, the GDL was ruled by the Grand Duke Olgerd Gediminovich – a very enthralling and complicated person. His main idea was to obtain the support of the Orthodox Russian population (to achieve this, he adopted Orthodox Christianity) and to act as a unifier of all Russian lands. So, he came into the conflict with Moscow and absorbed huge territories of the southern Russian region (including the ancient capital of Kievan Rus – Kiev!) into the GDL by defeating the Mongols. A perfect candidate to be a head of the united Russian state! However, the main obstacle was the strong position of Catholicism in the GDL. The church strived to unite Lithuania and Poland (it was done by Olgerd’s son, Jagiello). Which way to go – let the player decide! Olgerd shared his power with his pagan brother Kęstutis. They were on good terms. Olgerd ruled the western borderline of the state, holding back the onslaught of the crusaders. However, if the player chooses the Catholic path, this will inevitably trigger a conflict with Kęstutis. A hallmark of the GDL is multiculturalism (Lithuanian paganism in the north, Orthodoxy in the east, and Catholicism in the west!) and a unique political system (the GDL – a confederation without the hard power of the monarch /voluntary association). After the Olgerd death in 1377, Jagiello came to power. This date could become a kind of dilemma when the player can choose his further path: either continue to rely on the Orthodox Russian population, or go west and make connections with Catholic Poland. This ability to change history is the most magnificent thing about Total War games!
3. Western Golden Horde. The Western Golden Horde was the de facto ruler of the Russian territory. It acquired this status after the Mongol conquest of Rus in 1240. However, every year its power was draining away. And on the Russian territory there were growing powerful states, which dreamed of throwing off the odious Mongol horde. The Western Golden Horde was ruled by the military commander Mamai. A very cunning politician, he strived for all-encompassing power. The striking point was the Moscow principality, which was gaining strength. Furthermore, Mamai was not a Genghisid (a descendant of Genghis Khan), which made his position precarious. To gain authority with the nobility and strengthen power, it was necessary to force the Russian territory into obedience, other words, to crush Moscow! The Golden Horde was a Muslim state based on a nomadic structure. The state existed solely due to the tribute of Russian lands and spoils of war. The Golden Horde had an unsurpassed army with the Mongolian cavalry in the core. It was the cavalry who subjugated half of the world to Genghis Khan! Many other strong Russian principalities obeyed the Golden Horde, since they were dissatisfied with Moscow and wanted to teach her a lesson for its arrogance (Ryazan principality, Nizhny Novgorod principality, etc.).
4. Novgorod veche Republic. This state was a case of one and only historical phenomenon! Thanks to a unique veche system, the power belonged to the grassroots. Veche was the main governing body of Novgorod. During veche all critical issues were addressed. The Knyaz was invited, yet he did not present any political power and was just a voivode. Large territories of the republic were both an advantage and a disadvantage. Although the lands were vast, its fertility left much to be desired (bread shortages). But the Novgorodians this handicap through the development of craft and trade with the Western powers (Sweden, the Hanseatic League, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, etc.). The republic became rich: Novgorod itself was one of the richest and most beautiful cities in Europe and the Novgorod boyars could challenge even the boyars of Moscow! Despite the fact that the Novgorod Republic was predominantly Orthodox, various heresies and the Catholic Church had enormous influence on its territory and was a source of instability. The political structure of Novgorod also added fuel to the fire: continuing conflicts between parties jeopardized the stability. And various Finno-Ugric tribes (Chud, Merya, etc.) are constantly striving to separate from Novgorod, which was actually their patron and collected tributes from them. The Pskov Republic also posed a threat to Novgorod. Despite the similarities in the political structure of both the veche republics, Pskov regularly opposed Novgorod with the support of Moscow. Moreover, Moscow and the German knights-crusaders were encroaching on the land of Novgorod! But the Republic had every chance of overcoming these difficulties and gradual rise as the future center of the Russian lands!
5. Principality of Nizhny Novgorod-Suzdal. Principality of Nizhny Novgorod-Suzdal was a powerful rival of Moscow in the struggle for the unification of the Russian lands. It was patronized by the Golden Horde that relied on this region as a counterweight to the Moscow principality. It was ruled by Knyaz Andrei Konstantinovich, the son of the mighty Knyaz Constantine. The trade along the Volga sustained the economic power of the principality. In the XIV century It was set over other regions and had a shot at leadership in the race for the unification of all Russian lands!
6. Principality of Tver. With the center in the city of Tver, this ancient principality was once the most powerful contender for the overthrow of the Horde and the unification of the Russian lands. But, after 1327, when Tver was treacherously burned by the Moscow Knyaz after the anti-Mongol uprising, Principality of Tver was strongly thrown back. It was its military power that was a bargaining chip! Tver had a strong army and credibility among other principalities. Gradually returning its leadership position and being between the most powerful principalities (the GDL, Novgorod and Moscow), principality of Tver, due to its wise policy, had a shot at leadership in the race for the unification of the Russian lands and at retribution to Moscow for all the grievances!
7. The Livonian Order. The Livonian Order was a conquering, vanquishing and alien state! It was founded by fanatical Catholic feudal lords who strived to subjugate all Russian territories and to convert the local population to Catholicism. On their native lands the German knights-crusaders had an excellent military organization, strong economic power and religious zeal, so they had the potential to conquer the Russian territory and to become the puppet master of Eastern Europe!
Creating this game would be an unparalleled gift for Total War fans and it, perhaps, could have a huge commercial success, since this period could be of a great interest to a person, inquisitive about history! Moreover, the Middle Ages is very popular among the fans of your series of games (Attila, Shogun 2, Medieval 2 and others). And one should not forget about fans from Eastern Europe itself (and they are not few!).
I will attach a map of the Russian territory of this period with all the states I mentioned. Once again I would like to express my gratitude to your fabulous company for all the games you've created and wish you best of luck!
