Bio
Hi!, My name is Juan Antonio Martínez.

I was born in Spain, where I now live, and have spent half my life here and another half between England and Canada.

I am a sworn translator in Spain (after a stringent test, I'll have you know) English - Spanish.

I also speak French fluently and translate from French into either English or Spanish.

I understand the job of a translator not so much to repeat the "words" verbatim - only in another language -, but to generate in the target language reader the same mental images, the same concepts and the same sensations that are generated in the source language reader.

For this it is imperative to know not only both languages, but to be extensively immersed in both cultures. Only this way can you confidently transfer the original content to the target language in a way that does justice to the intent of the original text.

My more formal training is as a computer programmer, and also as a musician. However I am also trained in psychology, and have a wide set of interests, both in "hard" sciences and in more humanity oriented subjects (philosophy, religion, sociology).

In translation I have worked extensively as a technical translator - science, telecommunications and software localization mostly, later as a project manager and editor. I have also translated and continue to translate and/or edit other texts on subjects such as sufism, art criticism, history, etc.

I have taught technical translation and software localization at a couple of private universities in Spain (UNED - EUTI Granada - Cluny).

For the last 15 years I have been employed in another area (business coaching).

However, five years ago, our family moved from downtown Madrid to a small town in the mountains of Granada (Spain).

This has meant an improvement in our lifestyle and an opportunity for our small children (1 and a half and 5 years old) to grow close to nature.

However, this has made my full-time job as a business coach untenable - my potential clients are mostly in big cities.

Due to this, I have recently gone back to my previous profession of freelance translating, because I really enjoy translating and it is much more amenable to our current lifestyle.

And I get to play around and savor words once again...
