I make time to exercise Feb 13, 2013

Despite having grown up in front of a computer, I started weightlifting a year and a half ago and that has made all the difference. I find that has pretty much eliminated all the aches and pains I used to get from prolonged computer use in my childhood and would recommend it highly!

Yes, often Feb 13, 2013

Comes of having been stuck in front of a computer for almost 30 years and less and less exercise with each passing year.

On a positive note, though, I shall be remedying this in a few weeks time with 4 or 5 days on the slopes at Happo-one in Nagano, where they held the Winter Olympics several years back. This also is highly recommended!

Nice to see J>Es starting out with lots of vigor and energy tonight! ...

Hand and wrist strain. Of concern but not insurmountable Feb 13, 2013

Inflamed wrist and hand tendons after 5 years causing constant mild pain, especially at night - now always wear fingerless gloves + have properly sorted all workstation ergonomics out. Fingerless gloves miracle solution after making various finger and thumb holes in doubled up tubigrips which were never fully comfortable, and walking around looking like Mumra the Ever-living for a while, trailing rags. Doctor said nothing much to worry about as long as take the odd break for a few days, and I haven't got 'carpal tunnel syndrome' which every man and his dog suggested as my ailment! Maybe the physio will have the final answers next week.

I'm interested in your fingerless gloves, Lucy!

How does this help exactly?

It's me knees Feb 13, 2013

I have always maintained good posture at a desk/in front of the computer, but in the last few years, I find my knee joints ache a lot at the end of the day. It may well be old hockey injuries coming back to haunt me, and they probably would ache anyway. I have had them X-rayed fairly recently. Absolutely nothing wrong, as they say.

I do stretch and wriggle while sitting, and get up every now and then to straighten and stretch my legs.

Some hand and wrist strain occasionally, but I do massage them every day.

As a carer of someone who is disabled because of multiple sclerosis, I am, by default, the healthy one.

Back ache Feb 13, 2013

My back sometimes is absolutely killing me...the pain starts in my neck and goes all the way down to my right elbow and the area between my shoulder blades. Especially if I work on a different computer or with a different keyboard, so I get it's down to being so set in my postural ways...! Anyway, did MRI, tried therapy, got the T-shirt. I'll just live with it.

ergonomics... Feb 13, 2013

... are not optimal as I am using a very nice robust chair made by my grandfather - great to look at, not always best for your back and posture. Since buying a proper desktop computer instead of my old laptop, things have improved though.
Regular morning runs / weekend rows also help to keep little aches no more than that.

...now that the keyboard is low enough, the display high enough, screen resolution just great, I have one of those chairs for active sitting and I'm forced to take a few hours' break every day to exercise the horse.
Regular horseback riding does miracles for the back! (c: That is, except maybe on those days when Mr horse is feeling kind of bouncy.

Who doesn't? I try my best to remember to take regular breaks and do stretching exercises etc, but it isn't always easy, especially when you're busy.
I started using speech recognition software about a year ago, which means I type less and I find the combination really saves a lot of wear and tear on my wrists and shoulders.
I'm taking driving lessons at the moment to get my Spanish licence and I also get stiff shoulders from the tension of city driving, but I hope to get that stage

Sometimes Feb 13, 2013

I did an 80K translation job in November-December last year which involved hours of copy-pasting from various reference files and made my right upper arm and wrist ache. I still feel it and have started turning down similar jobs. I just bought a large curvy corner desk with support for my right arm, which helps.

I get pains in my right pinky Feb 13, 2013

For some reason my little finger hurts, but I have seen a colleague of mine using a vertical mouse, which he says is expensive, but might help.

I used to suffer badly from RSI in my right arm/wrist/hand, but using Dragon has sorted that out over the last 5 or so years. I changed my chair/ monitor position and bought an ergonomic keyboard/mouse and footrest when trying to resolve the RSI issue, but using speech recognition software was definitely the key for me.

I also find yoga helps any potential back/neck ache I used to get when sitting at the computer all day long and I walk the dogs twice a day and do badminton and danc

But I do get a tiny break and move around every time I need a cup of coffee, i.e. frequently!

I take walks and get a little proper exercise outdoors, weather permitting, though this winter has been slippery, and it's February... I am going to have to work hard at it when the ice melts.

My lack of manual dexterity is probably the reason why I don't often get wrist and arm strains - I simply do not move fast enough!
Thinking before I act is healthy.

I do have the mouse set for one click, not two, wherever possible, and since I do less proofreading on PDFs with Acrobat, I practically never feel twinges in my wrist. Using the 'blue notes' instead of yellow ones, for those who know what I mean, saves mouse clicks as well.

I use the mouse with my right hand, but am left handed for more or less everything else - it distributes the effort more evenly (and the breaks!)

I do get migraine attacks, but nothing like the ones I used to, and with sensible organisation most can be avoided. Medication deals with the rest.

There are advantages in getting older - you are not at the mercy of your children's social life, and some things get better, not worse!

And a really good chair and desk are probably among the best investments I ever made, with the light and monitor properly adjusted...
