I don't plan to retire | Jul 21, 2022 |
I don’t plan to retire and I’m well over retirement age. I started freelancing in 2006 when I retired from my in-house position. My plan is to keep on working (health permitting) as long as my clients continue to send work…
My elder colleague's mother said at the age of 90 that the biggest mistake she made in her whole life was to stop working at 80. The older you get, the more you need active work to keep your brain and body functional and ultimately stay alive.

I plan to retire at 50, I have been an expatriate for more than 20 years now. I saved and I need some rest. I will take care of my farm and I may rear livestock. I will not have a regular income but I will use my savings and I may make a small business.
working retiree | Jul 22, 2022 |
somewhere an equivalent of 200 bucks per month is officially considered good standard pension because it corresponds to minimal consumer bucket. Some profiteer on that, and call it business. So, you are working retiree (the position is missing in the survey list)

... because I am already over 70 I don´t work full time, and my priorities have changed generally. But as long as I can deliver a professional job and clients are satisfied, I will probably carry on.

I haven't thought about it beyond "well I'll see how I feel when I reach the age I can retire on a full retirement plan". Probably I'll take the money and continue working, but only for my favourite clients who send me the most interesting and well-paid work. While I fully agree with Anton for us, I do think that retirement is a very good idea, especially for those working jobs that take a physical toll. That's when I got my first job. I am not a person who likes to work. I'd much rather enjoy my hobbies. Unfortunately, I need money to live and pay for those hobbies, and translation was an easy profession for me, i.e. it came naturally for me. So the day I turn 65, I'm never ever translating again. I will finally enjoy my hobbies.

Due to the dire state of the market in Brazil, can't afford to retire. We have one hundred and twenty taxes, and the highest interest rates in the world. Another problem is that those lucky enough to be entitled to a pension (not common among freelancers as you need contributions) often only get one minimum salary as a pension. To get more, you can pay more so you get the 'teto' (maximum limit) but then the Government takes some of the money. So I'll be working until the day I die - if I g... University professors, teachers for example: would you say all of them didn't like what they were doing only because eventually they retired? I don't think so. Only freelancers are lucky enough to decide about their retirement.

Just like other few colleagues, I will work until my last breath! Not only because I (we) all need to pay bills, and make a living, but because I love what I do, hoping that my clients continue to assign me jobs, and I maintain my physical and mental health in good condition. Brazil is not the centre of the universe and it won't be the last country to have problems with increasing taxes and interest rates. ▲ Collapse
