Hi all!

This is to inform you about an a-mail I received today.

Since I'm used to receive this kind of e-mails (it seems I have a special gift for it! Eheheh!) and I know that some of them are quite tricky, I'd like to inform you about the contacts and e-mails so that nobody will lose time and money.

This is the first e-mail:

From: Lee Wood [email protected]

Hello,
I would need a proficient translator for a web blog from English to Spanish.
www.guaranteedmusicalinstrumentsales.blogspot.com
The Payment, shipping and Returns Pages only.
The deadline for this should be February 7th.
Expecting your quotes as soon as possible.
Regards

I've written to the e-mail address I've found on the blog to be sure that it was not a scam. Mr. Curtis Craig answered me: "Yes,he is about to do a blog design and translation for me. Kindly co-operate with him".

I've send the quotation and this is the answer:

From: Lee Wood [email protected]

I have a client who i designed the blog for and needs

translation.
I have charged a total of $3600 for the blog and i have

set aside a budget of $1000 for The translation jobs.
I only have a little problem i would need your

assistance.
He wants to pay via paypal and i do not have paypal as it

is not allowed here where i reside do to Govt.

restrictions.
As a result,i would need your kind assistance to help

receive the whole funds to your paypal account and after

deducting your fees and keeping the $1000 for future

translations,to send me the balance.
Kindly get back to me if this arrangement is fine by you.
I would be responsible for every commission and charges

by paypal.
Expecting to hear from you soon.
Regards
Lee Wood

I hope you can find it useful.

Regards

This type of scam is well known.

Perhaps keeping the full amount and.... wait for him to open up a PayPal account might teach these scammers a lesson. But this is not only unethical and unprofessional, but might also have some legal effects. It's best to just ignore these emails.

my reaction Feb 12, 2012

I may be paranoid, but I have never been scammed in 14 years.

I don't deal with individuals outside my own country and province. Never. Because I have no legal recourse there.

There are some countries I never deal with even it is is supposed to ber a translation company. Some companies are perfectly legitimate but their terms of payment are 120 days and sometimes even 180 and to me this is too long.

I don't deal with people who use @gmail or @yahoo addresse

I don't deal with people who use @gmail or @yahoo addresses.

You can use Google Maps to see if the address exists. But in your case they did not provide a address. It is much easier to check with a postal code, though.

I also recommend http://www.paymentpractices.net/Default.aspx + the ProZ Blue Board. I will not take a big order from a new client if there is no record.
