I received a job offer that immediately seemed suspect: Just a name, no explanation of who or where he was or the nature of the text, but the good thing I thought, was that the website it was sent from gave me his IP address which was from South Africa (he was probably not aware of this).

I requested more information from him, and he sent me the document to be translated, 16,000 words, and said he was in the USA but did't give me a contact number.

I gave him a quote but said I could not go ahead with the job untill I had more information from him, considering his IP address was not from where he said he was. Naturally I never heard from him again.

My point is that I found quite useful to have the IP address especially if the person contacting us is a private individual, could Proz facilitate that information?

All you have to do Mar 4, 2012

is open the full headers and paste the IP number into Google. You'll get all kinds of information.

Hi Claudia,

Investigating IP addresses is a fundamental part (and yet only a part) of the risk management procedures to be applied whenever approached by a new allegued person or agency contacting us with a business proposition.

IF you receive a message from your ProZ.com profile the sender's IP address will be clearly indicated in the headers of the message. For emails you should have a look at the dedicated wiki article.

Regards,
Enrique
