This is so good I had to share it. Note that I'm only including the name and the eerily similar email address in the From field because they're so obviously fake. Me Translator < [email protected]> To: undisclosed-recipients:; Hi dear I have a Greek-English project, and I want to translate it and deliver it within a specified date, using the Tardos program. I got your data from the Internet, and please do not be disturbed by my message. Words: 6076 Rate: $0.02 Tool - SDL Trados Return: 1 Studio return package file Delivery Timing: 4 pm IST Please work on the sdl trados file. The excel file is just for reference. Kindly proceed and deliver within the deadline. Ola Randomly generated company name Different address from the From [email protected] How many boxes does this one tick? If my interpretation of the time zone is correct, they allocated one and a half hours for this job. Presumably, the "Tardos" reference is a typo, and should refer to the "Tardis", i.e. the time machine the translator will require in order to complete the task "within a specified date". The email has two attachments. I wonder what they could be. | | | Thayenga Germany Local time: 04:18 Member (2009) English to German + ... A new experience | Sep 9, 2023 |
Thank you for sharing this wonderful job opportunity with us, Philip. You are absolutely right. It would indeed be a great, a unique experience to translate with the support of a time machine. Believe it or not, they sent me the same great job offer again, just a few hours later. Saturday must have been my lucky day! The same text, except for a few cuts that made it even less intelligible, and the rate had been reduced to $0.015. The deadline, however, remained the same, being now earlier than the time of the email, so the need for the Tardis was even more urgent. | |

I had the thought that maybe this is some kind of advance filter, which will let through only the most gullible of people, and the real scam comes later. Anybody who responds to this will subsequently receive an offer of the Brooklyn Bridge (or the Eiffel Tower, if in Europe) at a bargain price. | | | TonyTK German to English + ... It appears that the use of time machines in the translation industry is spreading. Yesterday (i.e. September 12) I got a job posting from ProZ that contained the following instructions: Delivery deadline: 2023-09-09 19:00:00 Quoting deadline: 2023-09-08 19:00:00 This job is available only to ProZ.com members until 5:42am Sep 7 GMT So now you need a Tardis just to quote on translation jobs, let alone actually deliver them. | | | Zea_Mays Italy Local time: 04:18 Member (2009) English to German + ...
