Upward displacement of air is good for gases that are heavier than air - such as carbon dioxide. The gas jar sits upright on the table, and the gas tube goes into the jar. The heavy gas goes to the bottom of the jar ans forces the lighter air up and out - so it is called "upward displacement of air."
