Spanish term

ataca (in context)

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Metallurgy / Casting
This is the sentence and I can't understand the use of "ataca" here:

A ser la zona total de refrigeracion muy larga, al final de la misma el agua **ataca** la palanquilla estando esta en posicion oblicua, por lo que puede correr po su zona inferior.

Can anybody help?
Thanks!

"stems" as in the sense of "making headway against" and thus being corrosive

In García Díaz's Diccionario técnico por Editorial Limusa, of the three translations give for "atacar" in a technical sense, the one that is most logical is "stem".
