@ Dariusz. I do get your point that meta/melina is a place not a social gathering, I assure you, and I made my suggestion with that knowledge. My point is that these terms are used in close association with a particular activity (group consumption of drink/narcotics), and probably in most communicative situations the general effect can be maintained by referring to the activity, especially when the specifics of the sentence make reference to the place difficult.

Anyway, it feels like we're beating dead horses on this one. :)

As always it comes down to context , if we knew more, we'd be able to make more informed decisions regarding translation shifts, and so on (and other platitudes).

@Luke Trust me, I do tread carefully, and I am a humble learner. I personally have never heard this expression in the US, and, I have to admit, did not check its meaning as used in the UK. My point is, again, that "meta" in Polish means a place, while a piss-up, as you yourself pointed out refers to a "social gathering". The Polish sentence does not say anything about any "social (booze or drug fueled?) gathering". The guy may have gone there just to pick up sth. without participating in any gathering whatsoever. "Meta" in Polish basically means a rundown, shabby place where booze flows freely and where people often do drugs. To me "Byles na mecie?" is like "Did you swing by Bodzio's place (neutral term)".

@Dariusz. You can talk at a piss-up as well, there's no enforced drinking, so I'm not sure I understand your point. As for 'crib', though I'm sure the suggestion is well-intentioned, it's a very delicate matter to translate slang from Polish (very culturally and ethnically homogeneous) into English (with it's numerous varieties and heightened racial sensitivities) using English words that have particular historical and current ethnic associations. When an English-speaker reads a text where criminal or drug-consuming/drinking white Poles speak like African Americans, the effect can be very jarring and the racial implications very offensive. Tread carefully.
