Gathering stitches to bind them off is often used to close the tops of hats.

Tagliare il filo, lasciando un pezzo abbastanza lungo, prendere un ago grosso a punta tonda e cucire le due parti insieme, passando il filo nelle maglie rimaste sui ferri

secondo me gather si riferisce a "raccogliere le maglie" e pull through a farci passere il filo attraverso. Però in italiano non si dice così e tu dovrei tradurlo in un modo che sia comprensibile per le tricottatrici ;)
