English term
lever
English to French
Art/Literary
Poetry & Literature
novel
Sentence: "...which lever to move round after she took each picture."
Context: a six-year old child finds her grandmother's old camera (silver film) and wants to take pictures.
Is "lever", levier d'armement ou de défilement ? Anyway I believe it must definitely be "levier" and not "molette" for instance.
What do you think? Thank you. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

manette

@ Tony (sorry, not enough space to answer in the box provided under your comment)
As a French native speaker, "manette" and "tirer" are the (non-technical) terms that come to my mind for this https://tinyurl.com/yasz6c4p.
Additionally, even if it is not direct speech (nor reported speech, strictly speaking, for that matter) IMO it definitely qualifies as internal focalization, where the author puts the reader in one of the character's shoes. Since the asker said it was for a novel, I'd aim to use something that subtly suggests to the reader what goes through the mind of a six-year old.

(petite) manivelle

: That's the film rewind handle, but you wouldn't use that after each picture — this is the lever to advance the film to the next clear space for the next shot.

levier
Note from asker:
Merci, c'est bien ça. |

: levier d'avancement du film http://35mm-compact.com/manuels/minolta-himaticf-fr/minolta-... // @ Didier: it's a lever you 'flick' round with your thumb.

: But it isn't a 'button' or 'knob' that you either push or turn; it is clearly a lever, that you flip round.
