There's no roads around most of the state, there's no telegraph wires, there's no telephone wires. At one point from Nome they could only send one telephone call at a time. Huge distances made communication difficult even high frequency signals would fizzle out when the northern lights appeared. ***Telecommunications functioned strictly by line of site*** so the rapid transmission of information over long distances was impossible.
