This is a technical (medical, scientific) name for the space in the abdomen ('belly')
Instead of saying that all these organs - stomach, intestines (intestine = gut), liver etc - are located in the space created in the 'belly' inside the muscle/fat/etc 'envelope'; medical people refer to the belly as 'abdomen' and to the space as 'cavity'.
Therefore, abdominal cavity = the space of/in the belly.
I know I have simplified the science in the interests of brevity, folks! :-)

Not sure what happened there, but I was going to give as reference the fact that I am a medical translator :-)
