'chanda' short form of 'chandala' a low cast who did the work of undertakers.

I think ‘chanda is a short form of 'chandala' - who were crematorium attendants who carried out undertakers tasks in ancient India. They were considered the lowest of the ‘untouchable’ casts as they dealt with dead bodies. King Ashoka, who belonged to the higher 'Kshtriya' caste ( of royals and warriers) earned the "shameful" sobriquet of Chandashoka
(the lowest of the low castes) because of his sheer brutality in his earlier life whereby he made battlefields become graveyards. In the battle with the kingdom of Kalinga, the whole of Kalinga army was killed to a man and there was none left alive in the battlefield. Ashoka is said to have become so horror struck and deeply shocked by his own actions that he eschewed violence for good, became a Buddhist and spread the doctrine of ‘non – violence’ far and wide across his kingdom. Thus the purveyor of corpses became the evangelist for non – violence and converted to Buddhism and this conversion earned him the name of ‘Dhamashoka’ – the follower of the Dhama/dharma(religion) of Buddhism.

sorry again, your query says Dharma not Dhamma. 'Dhamma' is "the truth taught by the Buddha" so since Ashoka converted to Buddhism he may have been called Dhammashoka in some placesI think!

Chandashoka

Dharmashoka

Example sentence:

The bloodbath in Kalinga War transformed Chandashok to Dharmashok. He turned to Buddhism and helped spread the religion in India and abroad
