The flash storage market today feels somewhat reminiscent of a famous old movie line: “Flash, I love you! But we only have 14 hours to save the Earth!”1 If you drink too much industry Kool-Aid, you could be forgiven for thinking flash storage is indeed the savior of the storage world. And there’s no doubt it can do wonderful things. But the truth is far more about pragmatism than panacea. This is because flash is a technology, and not a market. Indeed, flash is—more accurately—an umbrella technology type, within which there are numerous implementations.
Solid-state storage has been around in some form or another for over three decades, but only in the last few years has it become widely adopted, a change that is principally based on three things:
• IT Needs: The need for higher performance driven by such things as new applications, virtualization, the web, clouds, “consumerization”…and let’s not forget higher user expectations. There is an increasing “understanding” that performance will simply “be there.”
• Media Attributes: Solid-state technology itself has overall improved, with flash storage being nonvolatile, much less expensive than even a couple of years ago, and sporting much-improved manageability, longevity, and reliability (albeit the last two elements are invariable achieved via sophisticated management algorithms because the charge to higher capacity/lower cost raw media is not actually improving longevity).2
• Deployment Options: Coming to terms with flash media, the storage industry has developed methods to:
• Judiciously leverage small amounts of this still-relatively-expensive resource to deliver great impact, both in terms of operational benefit and financial attraction.
• Enable sufficient flash efficiency so that IT users can now run whole or multiple workloads in all-flash configurations while still enjoying economics that are comparable to hybrid systems.

Ovviamente non c’è dubbio che possa fare cose grandiose. Ma la verità è molto di più del dilemma pragmatismo contro panacea. Questo perché la memoria flash non è un mercato, ma una tecnologia. Infatti, più precisamente parlando, è una tecnologia-tipo-ombrello, all’interno della quale vi sono numerose implementazioni.
La memoria a stato solido vive in un modo o nell’altro da oltre tre decenni, ma solo negli ultimi anni è stata adottata su larga scala; parliamo di un cambiamento che si basa fondamentalmente su tre cose:
• bisogno dell’IT: il bisogno di prestazioni maggiori richieste da entità come nuove applicazioni, virtualizzazioni, il web, i cloud, “consumerizzazione”...e non dimentichiamoci delle aspettative degli utenti più esperti. C’è una maggiore “comprensione” del fatto che le prestazioni, nella maniera più semplice possibile, “ci saranno”.
• caratteristiche dei media: nel suo complesso, la tecnologia a stato solido è migliorata, con memorie flash non volatili e di gran lunga meno costose rispetto ad un paio di anni fa, gestibilità di tutto rispetto, longevità ed affidabilità (anche se gli ultimi due elementi sono invariabilmente rispettati tramite sofisticati algoritmi di gestione perché la carica di superiore capacità/inferiore supporto grezzo costo in realtà non migliora la longevità). 2
• Opzioni di distribuzione: nel venire a patti con i flash media, l’industria dell’archiviazione ha elaborato delle metodologie per:
• sfruttare scrupolosamente piccole quantità di questa risorsa che risulta ancora relativamente costosa per offrire un grande impatto, sia in termini di benefici operativi sia di attrazione finanziaria.
• attivare una sufficiente efficienza flash in modo che gli utenti IT possano eseguire carichi di lavoro completi o multipli in configurazioni all-flash, potendo comunque godere degli aspetti economici paragonabili ai sistemi ibridi.

Текст оригинала - английский Nanotechnology has been applied to the field of regenerative medicine to yield biocompatible substrates that can be employed to regenerate veins, skin, cartilage and nerves.
Patients subjected to self-transplant currently have difficulty in retrieving healthy and sufficiently abundant tissues for the double surgical procedures: explants and implants. Such problem strongly affects children, old-aged, severe burn victims and, in general, any patient that wishes to reduce recovery time.
Linari Engineering has designed and engineered a device able to model 3D structures from polymeric nanofibers . We called our machine RTCollector, and it is currently the fastest and most precise commercial available machine in the world in nanoimprinting fiber deposition and patterning. Rapid one hour assembly allows almost out-of-the-box use, thus making it extremely popular with scientific laboratories throughout the five continents. Results yield structures with exceptional mechanical properties: elasticity, thickness, density, biocompatibility similar to living tissue.
What’s missing? These substrates prove insufficient for what concerns permeability to gas, fluids and nutrients; therefore, they still cannot be implanted into humans. Experiments on new material compounds and new technical solutions that allow real-time monitoring of nanoimprinted fibers are necessary, given the current lack of any machinery able to deposit an extremely thin jet with micrometric precision at several meters per second.
Animal testing on nanoimprinted substrates is currently underway. The goal is to perform suturing of traumatized nerves in order to restore functionality and sensitivity to patients currently afflicted by the loss of these characteristics. Future uses also aim to reconstruct cartilage parts such as the nasal septum or ears from 3D structures custom modeled for each patient, as well as fashion “skin bandages” or “vein tubes” that initially substitute skin or veins. These implants ensure the protection of underlying tissue or blood flow and are gradually absorbed by the body to leave room for growing skin and veins, which coat these absorbable nanoimprints.
An ambitious and multidisciplinary project that opens the doors to potential collaborations with pharmaceutical companies for the production and marketing of ready for use “vein tubes” and “skin bandages” to hospitals.

Attualmente sono in corso test animali su substrati sottoposti a nanoimprinting. L’obiettivo è quello di procedere alla sutura dei nervi traumatizzati, al fine di ripristinare la funzionalità e la sensibilità dei pazienti attualmente affetti dalla perdita di questi ultimi. I prossimi impieghi puntano alla ricostruzione delle parti cartilaginee come il setto nasale o le orecchie partendo da strutture 3D modellate su misura per ogni paziente, così come “bende cutanee” o “tubi vena” attualmente in voga, che in un primo momento sostituiscono la pelle o le vene. Questi impianti garantiscono la protezione del tessuto sottocutaneo come del flusso ematico e vengono gradualmente assorbiti dal corpo per lasciare spazio alla crescita della pelle e delle vene, che coprono questi nano-elementi assorbibili.
Un progetto ambizioso e multidisciplinare che apre le porte a potenziali collaborazioni con aziende farmaceutiche per la produzione e la commercializzazione ad ospedali di “bende cutanee” o “tubi vena” pronti per l’uso.
