English to French: Mac American Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English Speaking of Sport,” said Mac. “The greatest sport in the world is hunting niggers. After I left Burlington, you remember, I drifted down South. I was out to see the world from top to bottom, and I had just found out I could scrap. God! The fights I used to get into.... Well anyway, I landed up on a cotton plantation down in Georgia, near a place called Dixville; and they happened to be shy of an overseer, so I stuck.
“I remember the night perfectly, because I was sitting in my cabin writing home to my sister. She and I always hit it off, but we couldn’t seem to get along with the rest of the family. Last year she got into a scrape with a drummer—and if I ever catch that— Well, as I say, I was sitting there writing by the light of a little oil lamp. It was a sticky, hot night, the window screen was just a squirming mass of bugs. It made me itch all over just to see ‘em crawling around. All of a sudden, I pricked up my ears, and the hair began to stand right up on my head. It was dogs—bloodhounds—coming lickety-split in the dark. I don’t know whether you fellows ever heard a hound bay when he’s after a human.... Any hound baying at night is about the lonesomest, doomingest sound in the world. But this was worse than that. It made you feel like you were standing in the dark, waiting for somebody to strangle you to death—and you couldn’t get away!
“For about a minute all I heard was the dogs, and then somebody, or some Thing, fell over my fence, and heavy feet running went right past my window, and a sound of breathing. You know how a stubborn horse breathes when they’re choking him around the neck with a rope? That way.
“I was out on my porch in one jump, just in time to see the dogs scramble over my fence. Then somebody I couldn’t see yelled out, so hoarse he couldn’t hardly speak, ‘Where’d he go?’
“’Past the house and out back!’ says I, and started to run. There was about twelve of us. I never did find out what that nigger did, and I guess most of the others didn’t either. We didn’t care. We ran like crazy men, through the cotton field, and the woods swampy from floods, swam the river, dove over fences, in a way that would tire out a man in a hundred yards. And we never felt it. The spit kept dripping out of my mouth, that was the only thing that bothered me. It was full moon, and every once in a while when we came out into an open place somebody would yell ‘There he goes!’ and we’d think the dogs had made a mistake, and take after a shadow. Always the dogs ahead, baying like bells. Say, did you ever hear a bloodhound when he’s after a human? It’s like a bugle! I broke my shins on twenty fences, and I banged my head on all the trees in Georgia, but I never felt it....”
Mac smacked his lips and drank.
“Of course,” he said, “when we got up to him, the dogs had just about torn that coon to pieces.”
He shook his head in shining reminiscence.
“Did you finish your letter to your sister?” I asked.
“Sure,” Said Mac, shortly....
Translation - French « En parlant de sport, » dit Mac. « Le meilleur sport au monde, c’est la chasse aux Nègres. Après avoir quitté Burlington, voyez-vous, je suis descendu vers le Sud. En voulant voir le monde de haut en bas, je m’étais trouvé des talents de bagarreur. Seigneur! Les batailles auxquelles j’ai pris part… Enfin, peu importe, j’ai atterri dans une plantation de coton en Géorgie, près d’un endroit nommé Dixville. Ils cherchaient un contremaître, alors je suis resté. »
« Je n’oublierai jamais cette nuit, j’étais assis dans ma cabine, en train d’écrire une lettre à ma sœur. Elle et moi avons toujours été proches, ce qui n’est pas le cas pour le reste de la famille. L’année dernière, elle a eu des ennuis avec un batteur – si jamais je lui mets la main au collet. Enfin, comme je disais, j’étais assis, en train d’écrire, à la lumière d’une petite lampe à l’huile. C’était une nuit chaude et humide. Ma fenêtre était couverte de moustiques. Ça me piquait un peu partout juste à les voir en train de grouiller. Soudainement, un son a attiré mon attention et les cheveux se sont dressés sur ma tête. C’était des chien – des chiens pisteurs – qui se déplaçaient rapidement dans le noir. Je ne sais pas si vous avez déjà entendu un chien hurler quand il pourchasse un humain… Le simple hurlement d’un chien dans la nuit est pratiquement la chose la plus solitaire et angoissante au monde. Cette fois-ci, c’était encore pire. Ça vous donnait l’impression d’être seul dans le noir à attendre que quelqu’un vienne vous étrangler – sans que vous ne puissiez vous échapper! »
« Pendant environ une minute, je ne pouvais entendre que les chiens, puis quelqu’un ou quelque chose est tombé de ma clôture et j’ai entendu des bruits de pas et une respiration haletante. Vous savez, le genre de son qu’un cheval entêté fait quand on le tire par le cou avec une corde? Ce genre de bruit.
« D’un bond, je suis sorti sur la véranda, juste à temps pour voir les chiens sauter par-dessus la clôture. Puis, quelqu’un que je ne pouvais pas voir a crié avec une voix tellement enrouée qu’il arrivait à peine à parler ‘’Par où est-il passé?’’ »
« Passé la maison, dans la cour arrière! » Me suis-je écrié avant de commencer à courir. Nous étions environ une douzaine. Je n’ai jamais su ce que ce Négro avait fait et j’imagine qu’une bonne partie des autres n’en savaient pas plus que moi. On s’en foutait. On a couru comme des enragés à travers les champs de coton, puis dans les bois devenus vaseux à cause des récente inondations; nous avons traversé la rivière à la nage, enjambé des clôtures à un rythme qui aurait épuisé un homme après moins de 100 mètres. Nous étions infatigables. La salive n’arrêtait pas de couler de ma bouche et c’était la seule chose qui m’embêtait. C’était la pleine lune et à chaque fois qu’on arrivait dans un endroit dégagé, on criait ‘’Le voilà!’’ et, pensant que les chiens s’étaient trompés, on courait après la silhouette dans la noirceur. Les chiens étaient toujours devant nous, hurlant comme des démons. Je vous le dis; avez-vous déjà entendu un chien hurler quand il poursuit un humain? C’est comme un clairon! Je me suis brisé les tibias sur une vingtaine de clôtures et me suis cogné la tête sur tous les arbres de Géorgie. Rien ne pouvait m’arrêter… »
Mac, avec un air satisfait, s’arrêta pour prendre une gorgée.
« Évidemment, » dit-il, « quand on l’a attrapé les chiens avaient réduit ce Nègre en lambeaux. »
Il secoua sa tête avec nostalgie.
« As-tu terminé la lettre que tu écrivais à ta sœur? » Demandai-je.
« Oui, bien sûr. » Répondit Mac.
« J’aimerais pas trop vivre ici, au Mexique, » avança-t-il. « Les gens d’ici n’ont pas de cœur. J’aime que les gens soient aimables, comme les Américains. »

It
all started when I was a child. When I was very young and didn’t know how to
read, my parents would tell me stories and read books to me before I would go
to sleep. Therefore, I rapidly developed an interest, and eventually a passion
in reading and literature; this passion evolved into a passion for language and
linguistics. I learned English when I was young: maybe 10 years old. You need
to know that Montreal is a bilingual city in many aspects; you cannot really
find a good job here if you don’t speak English.
I
started to study History in University, where I also started working part time
as a translator, helped by my aunt who had years of experience in this field. I
enjoyed it so much that I decided to complete a master’s degree in this amazing
field.
I got
