Source text - English IF GOOD LITERARY critics are rarer than good poets or novelists, one reason is the nature of human egoism. A poet or novelist has to learn to be humble in the face of his subject matter which is life in general. But the subject matter of a critic, before which he has to learn to be humble, is made up of authors, that is to say, of human individuals, and this kind of humility is much more difficult to acquire. It is far easier to say – “Life is more important than anything I can say about it" – than to say "Mr. A's work is more important than anything I can say about it".
Translation - Portuguese Se as boas críticas literárias são mais incomuns em relação a bons poetas ou novelistas, uma das razões é a natureza do egoísmo humano. Um poeta ou romancista deve aprender a ser modesto perante seu tema: a vida em geral. English to Portuguese: Urban Crime
Source text - English BRAZILIANS see their land, usually rightly, as a gentle one, untroubled by war or ethnic strife. Not so the embattled residents of Rio de Janeiro. This city has put up with all manner of felony, from bank robberies to kidnappings to shootouts between rival drug gangs. Many of its richer residents live behind walls and triple-locked doors and think twice before venturing out into Brazil's most violent streets. Now, though, Rio's citizens seem to have had enough. On November 28th they took to the streets *en masse* to protest and parade – and to pray -- for peace.
Though the march organizers fell far short of their goal, to muster one million people, the multitude – 70,000, said the police, twice as many, according to the organizers – made a brave show. Dressed in white, their arms linked in solidarity, faces smudged in "peace paint", all kinds of C*ariocas*, from the poor to politicians, from pastors to rap artists, joined in.

Their aim, to halt the plague of urban violence, was sound, their means of doing it vague, as the state governor said in a brief message conveyed through an envoy to the organizers. Even more remote was the fund-raising target, $1 billion for Rio's poorest slums. The open agenda turned the march into a stump for just about everyone, from partisans of Jesus to those who prayed noisily for "an end to capitalism". Yet the urgency of the cause is plain to all.
The slogan and name of the movement that inspired the march is *Reage, Rio* ! (Rio, react!). It has been compared to the "I Love New York" slogan that rallied citizen support for that troubled city in the 1970s. Like New York, Rio is a city that inspires much loyalty and passion, even in its worst state – and needs to. Once the flourishing capital of all Brazil, it has fallen fast and low. Though the region's economy is growing again and investors and tourists are starting to venture back, Rio's turnaround is still timid. And crime does not help.
It is not random violence. Most major crimes can be traced directly to cocaine traffickers. Though far from Bolivian in scale, Brazil's drug traffic brings intense rivalry between dozens, perhaps hundreds, of petty retailers who have set up shop in the favelas, the slums that climb Rio's hillsides. Their turf wars have claimed tens of thousands of victims. Almost 90% of violent crime committed against, or by, minors – and that means most of it – is drug-related.
Years ago, as Rio's crime soared, the federal government sent the army to patrol the bandit hillsides. Little use came of it apart from the arrest of a few local drug bosses, youngsters mostly, clad in rubber sandals and bearing machine guns. But it had a notable side-effect: a rash of other crimes, especially bank robberies and kidnappings, caused apparently by the drug traffickers' demands for quick cash.
Rio's police force says it is on top of these crimes. Yes, indeed, and that is part of the problem. Too often, police on the take have been known to wink at crimes, when they do not commit them outright. In most kidnappings, families of hostages prefer to keep quiet and pay the ransom rather than turn the case over to the police. Two years ago, a Rio state prosecutor was plotting the arrest of more than 100 big drug dealers, he had to call off the bust. "We found that police had been bribed and had tipped them off.
Yet now, at long last, this hostage city may have begun to stir. Police are cooperating with citizens in community policing efforts. Evangelical churches are training favela-dwellers for jobs other than selling drugs. President Fernando Henrique Cardoso has pitched in, once again deploying army troops, but this time more usefully by sending them to Rio state's borders, a sieve for drugs, guns, and outlaws. It will take more than soldiers or citizens marching in white to shake out corruption and bring peace. But for a city that has been at the edge of an undeclared war, any reaction seems a good one.

Suas guerras por território reivindicaram dezenas de milhares de vítimas. Quase 90% dos crimes cometidos contra ou por minorias - ou seja, a maioria - é relacionado às drogas.
Anos atrás, a criminalidade disparou, o governo federal enviou o exército para patrulhar os morros dos criminosos. "Nós descobrimos que a polícia havia sido subornada e tinha os avisado.".
Mas agora, finalmente, esta cidade refém parece ter começado a se levantar. A polícia está a cooperar com a população nos esforços de policiamento comunitários. Igrejas evangélicas estão a treinar os moradores das favelas para conseguir emprego ao invés de vender drogas. O presidente Fernando Henrique Cardoso têm contribuído, implantando tropas do exército novamente, só que desta vez de forma mais eficiente. enviando-os para as fronteiras do estado do Rio, uma filtro para drogas, armas e foras-da-lei. Claro que para trazer a paz e estremecer a corrupção, soldados e cidadãos marchando em branco não serão suficientes. Mas para uma cidade que beirou uma guerra não declarada, qualquer reação soa bem.

Hello everyone, my name is Mateus Moreno, I'm 23 years old, Brazilian. I just found out my unremitting love for languages and my willingness to become a translator. I had my first contact with translation in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic when a friend of mine told me a Facebook page was searching for people who know english to help translating an entire game called The Elder Scrolls Online so that they could make a Mod that could add portuguese captions to the game, since the company responsible for the game didn't care about it. When I realized I was able to do it while I was having so much fun doing that voluntary job, my mind just snapped with the idea of doiing this for a living and I started to search about this huge language world. I couldn't help but fall in love with all this.
