As in: "What can you do with a checking account?"
I have heard Vietnamese people use "ngân phiếu" or "séc" when they talk about "check/checking". If the document is for Vietnamese living in the US, which one is more appropriate do you think? Cám ơn.

Some time ago, I did a translation job which is about "checking account". I translated it simply as "tài khoản dùng séc" and the editor who lives in America said that Vietnamese people in America say "trương mục vãng lai". Why "vãng lai"? Because checking accounts are meant neither for the purpose of earning interest nor for the purpose of savings, but for convenience of the business or personal client; hence they tend not to bear interest. Instead, a customer can deposit or withdraw any amount of money any number of times, subject to availability of funds. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Checking_account#Checking_accou... You can google "trương mục vãng lai" and find out more.

Wow. Really? Does any one know what "vãng lai" mean and/or how checking is translated as that? |

trương mục séc
This is what VN people commonly use in Australia now, but there are other variations (usually depending upon length of time in country):
ngân phiếu; or
ngân phiếu séc; or
tài khoản séc (usually recent arrivals).

@Linh Trinh: Since there are NO checks (Br EN: cheques) used in VN, I think you and the editor might have misunderstood the purpose of the question: immediate understanding of the banking/financial concepts of this type of banking account ... as popularly used by "Việt Kiều Mỹ"!
The words we use in VN to describe something in Vietnamese are sometimes TOTALLY different to what our Vietnamese "đồng bào" use overseas!
