This simply means that instead of referring to him as "Delamere", they referred to him as "D"

This is fairly common in English...my brother is a school teacher and the students call him "Mr P"

Note that it says "...and to people who knew him well"...so, not everyone allowed himself to use this term...only those who were close to him.

agree Said Tabibi : In this context its only "D"- first digit of his name, "D-elamere"او "دی "بود برای من و برای همه کسانی که اورا به خوبی می شناختند.
