English term

Taking 40 winks. Phew!

English to Chinese Art/Literary
"I think it's just absolutely amazing," concludes Tony of the Klimt. And it looks even better sideways. For all the innocent hazy charm of the Degas, it can't compete. But who is the mysterious long-haired figure on the left of the Klimt picture? Well, considering it's called 'The Three Ages Of Woman', it's probably just her mum. Taking 40 winks. Phew!

Forty winks: [n] a short sleep (usually not in bed)

This is one of my favorite expression but I never know why it is FORTY winks!! Here is a little explanation:

Forty used to be not only a precise number but also an indefinite term for a large number. There are frequent biblical references to 'forty days' which means no more than 'for a long time', and because of this frequency the number 40 came to have an almost sacrosanct quality. It is probably this sense, jocularly applied, that lies behind 'forty winks', a wink itself being a short spell of sleep.

I think \"Taking a forty wink. Phew!\" is more of the \"joke\" than \"it\'s probably just her mum\". Klimt\'s \"Three Ages of Woman\" IS a depiction of a woman, her mother and her child.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer.

From the web, "take forty winks" means

naughty expression!

It just describes a naughty expression without other special meanings. Please note "the it's probably just her mum" is a funny joke.

nap = (在白天的)小睡,打盹 eg Grannie likes to have a short nap after lunch.

forty winks = a short sleep
